share external hard drive

I am able to access my desktop to my laptop as part of a homegroup, but can not access the external hard drive that is attached to my office. I want to be able to back up my laptop hard disk external.  Advice please.

geraintjo

I do not use homegroups, but 'true' to share, so I don't know how this is supposed to work with homegroups. But usually he should share a drive or folder, first before you can access it from another machine. (for example, click on the drive/folder properties and go to the sharing tab)

  • Could not access the external hard drive on the WRT610N

I recently bought the WRT610N router and updated the firmware version 1.00.02 B10 on it. I also have a 500 GB WD Caviar Green hard drive in an external enclosure to Koutech EEC320. I wanted to connect my HD in a configuration server network via the USB port on the router.

The first time I hooked it up, everything worked for the most part very well: I could go to the tab of storage on the utility line of router, put in place actions and other things. The problem was that I could not really give administrator rights to access the actions I put in place on the hard drive, so I couldn't change the files or anything like that. I would try to put in place the administrative privileges in the sharing settings, but they would never appear in the summaries of the part. I even tried to change the share name of the 'Default' which appears at random at one time, but this caused the group to disappear her privileges, and the 'failure' share to disappear (although the usefulness of reserves still the name for him) which means I can't do another flaw).

I have reset the router to try to get the sharing by default return, but now whenever I try to access the storage in the router utility tab, I get a blank screen, so I can't recreate all the actions on my HD Plus, every tab I try to access after the who end up in a screen blank until I restart my browser where all is well until I try to access the store again. This happens even after resetting the router several times and even reinstall the firmware once.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem in order to access and edit files on my hard drive through my network?

Yay! I got 'Default' on my HD! Now, it would be great if I could add permissions to actions so I can add more readers...

  • Access my external hard drive to Windows on my new Mac

    Hello world

I am a new user of Mac Yosemite, recently moved from Windows and I am a passionate photographer

All my photos are saved on two external hard drives of laptop computer Windows

Is it possible to access outside data by car and it is hard on the Mac

I keep reading things on the partition and FAT32 or the disc running utilities to reformat, but I'll lose all the images on the external hard drive

I feel like I'm missing something here

[What should I do to be able to view my images on Mac, I will then load in Lightroom for editing [the forest of Lightroom] that I'm very good]

    Thank you... Venus

Simply connect the player and open the files. Unless you need to write to the disk, you don't need to do anything else.

    Hello ShamedMonkey,

Thank you for your message.  The problem you are having is because of differences in formatting between PC and Mac.  You can, however, transfer your files between the two.  I will set out what must be done under and limitations of each.
First, you will need to format the drive on your PC.  When you format the PC, you can format it in FAT32 or NTFS.
(You mentioned that you do not see the drive in the computer) To format drive:
Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
    Click on "disk management".
In the right pane, you should see your drive > you can then do a right click and 'format '.
    FAT32:
This format will allow you to easily transfer files between the two.  This format becomes problematic when you transfer files more than 4 G.  There is a limit of 4 GB in FAT32, etc. of many movies are bigger than that and cannot be transferred using this format.
    NTFS
This format has no size limitation, however, in its normal state it will be 'Read only' on Mac.  If you will not be able to transfer all the data itself.  While doing some research on the web, it seems that you can use a program called MacFuse on your Mac to change to NTFS files.  I have not confirmed this, but you can give it a try.  If this program works as planned, it would be the way to go.
Please let us know if it did or did not solve your problem.
    See you soon

FWIW, do not change the extensions of file simply by copying the files to an external drive.

    Hi Faye,

It seems that you have a problem with access to a shared external drive of Windows XP computers and "Access denied" error message.

I imagine the inconvenience that you are experiencing. We are here to help and guide you in the right direction.

    Method 1:
I suggest you to make sure whether or not the disk is shared properties.

    (a) right click on the drive that you want to access.

    (b) click on the sharing tab.

    (c) click on share tab.

    (d) select user name or residential group you want to share with and click on the Add button.

e level) right click on the user name or the Group residential and fixed the permissions you want.

    Method 2:
If the problem persists I suggest you apply the full control permission on the disk that you want to share and check if it helps.

  • Cannot access the files from the internal hard drive that has been converted to drive external hard after the motherboard is dead

I can't access the files from an internal hard drive that has been converted to drive external hard after the motherboard is dead. I think that my files are still there, as shown in the volume of the player volume ~ 500 gb which is almost completely full. But I can't access most files, including documents and settings. When I took 'ownership' of the folder, I could open the TI but then it showed everything that was in my documents and settings on the computer file I used to open it, not the documents of the car.

Uhm... I think the issue here is a misunderstanding of what you watch.

If you want to access your files from the old hard drive - you need to look in the right place.  If the old system was "Windows 7", "Documents and Settings" is the * wrong * place to look and "Users" would be the place to go.

You * will * take ownership and change permissions on ALL (you want to propagate to all subfolders/files when do - to save time) in order to get them properly.

New-->: Windows Vista/7 would have your files located in the directory 'Users' of the root of the drive - and then under your username.

    • \USERS\\Desktop\
    • \USERS\\Downloads\
    • \USERS\\Favorites\
    • \USERS\\Documents\
    • \USERS\\Music\
    • \USERS\\Pictures\
    • \USERS\\Videos\

    ... etc...

Documents and settings to WIndows Vista/Windows 7 is a symbolic link and would lead to what you see if you tried to use it.

  • User with limited XP Home Edition privleges can not access an external hard drive

I can't set up an external hard drive in Windows XP Home Edition so that a user who has 'Limited' privleges can access.  The user receives the access denied message.  I tried to configure this by starting in safe mode.  I shared the unit with everyone.  If I'm the administrator user then it can access the drive.  The troubling question is that this system has been configured with the user having limited privleges as well as access to the external drive in the past.  I recently removed Norton antivirus and replaced by MS Security Essentials and I'm so glad I did.  But now it's problem arose.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You probably just need to change permissions for access of the disk and/or subfolders.  The following article describes how to do this:

"How to set, view, change, or remove special permissions for files and folders in Windows XP"

The bad news is that this article was written for XP Pro and you have XP Home.  This means that the 'Security' tab, which is at the heart of the management of permissions is not present during the implementation of the properties of file or a folder on your computer. (Or y at - it an option to disable Simple file sharing).  The good news is that if you start your computer in safe mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when your computer starts) and log on as a user with administrator privileges, you can then obtain access to the security"" tab.  Once you have access to this tab, you can give "Everyone" permission to all of the disk if you wish.  Once you set the permissions as you like them, you can restart your machine in Normal mode.

  • "Access denied" error XP trying to access an external hard drive used on Windows 7

    Hello

I used my external hard drive as usual on my XP machine for months, but yesterday I had to use it on another computer running Windows 7. Windows 7 asked something like "do you want to enable access to this hard drive?" and I clicked Yes thinking that it wouldn't cause any problems (showed a green bar that drains into the upper part of the window), but now that I'm trying to use it again on my XP machine I get an access denied error such as permissions changed. I just installed service pack 3, but which did not help.

Help it would be greatly appreciated the fixing, I'm happy to just continue to use the external drive on my XP machine - use it on other Windows 7 machine was just one time.

    Thank you!

  • Android access to external hard drive attached to EA6900

    Hello

I want to have my android device (4.4.4) to connect to an external hard drive attached to my EA6900 - wireless of course.

What is the best way to do it? Better way

    (a) you don't need to be a network engineer

    (b) access to the files is fast

I saw someone recommended software EAS, but then they said it took TWO HOURS to make it work. Give me a break.

    Thank you

    Alex

I have been using an application called File Manager by cheetah mobile. version 2.5.0.442 and it took 5 seconds to access my NAS from inside the network. haven't tried it outside, but I know that I can ftp from the application. I think they have a free version to try, but not sure about that. might be worth looking at.
