  You need to duplicate pictures unless you want to use the PSE as external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a library owner, which should never be marred with programs other than iphoto.   It's a little tricky to deal with.  The disc "HP_Recovery" is supposed to be a hidden partition that contains all the files required to restore your computer to its "fresh coming from the factory" State.  Normally, you should not access this drive or remove any of its files.

  As a general rule, the restore partition is put in place to have just enough space to hold the files to restore, so add only a little more will trigger the warning.

  You will find several places on the Internet that describe how to disable the warning (for example http://www.jvfconsulting.com/blog/89/How_To_Fix_You_Are_Running_Out_Of_Disk_Space_On_HPRECOVERY.html), but it's a bit like taking the batteries in your smoke detector, because you do not like the tone.

  Your recovery Partition was photographed on your hard drive during the production of your computer by the manufacturer for all of these reasons.

  I'd be interested to see a report of Disk Defragmenter. Open Disk Defragmenter and click analysis. Select view report, and then click Save as and save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents folder. If a volume has less than 15% free space, Disk Defragmenter defragment only partially. To increase the free space on a volume, remove unnecessary files or move them to another disk.

The biggest space hogs are "C:\WINDOWS" and "C:\Documents and Settings\Allen\Local Settings" (Allen in me), both with 8 MB.  I install most apps on another partition of 200 GB.  My data are also on another partition (250 GB).  I'm surprised that the C: partition got so full.

  When I installed first the o/s, I moved "My Documents" to the 'data' partition, using the built-in functionality of XP (I forgot how, now). I can do the same thing with "C:\Documents and Settings"?

  You can create more free space in C in carrying one of the measures suggested below.

On the general tab, you can see the winning amount by deducting the size on disk size. File compression is only an option on an NTFS formatted disk partition / partition.
