I can not get the security back to the Auto Update Center.

When I go to System Properties in Control Panel, then automatic updates window is all gray and inaccessible to my cursor.

Automatic updates grayed out (from Ramesh MVP):

To do automatic updates options configurable by the user (only for stand-alone systems), remove restrictions. Since you don't say if you have XP Home or Pro, here are the instructions for both versions.

Click Start, run and type REGEDIT. EXE. Go to this location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-SOFTWARE-policies-Microsoft-Windows------WindowsUpdate------AU

In the right pane, delete the two values AUOptions and NoAutoUpdate

Go to this location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER-SOFTWARE-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion------policies------WindowsUpdate

In the right pane, delete the DisableWindowsUpdateAccess value

Using the Group Policy Editor - for Windows XP Professional only

Navigate to the following location:

=> Configuration of the computer
==> Administrative templates
===> Windows components
===> Windows Update

In the right pane, double click on configure automatic updates and set it to not configured.

Next, go to this location:

=> User configuration
==> Administrative templates
===> Windows components
===> Windows Update

In the right pane, the value remove access to all Windows Update features to not configured. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!
