  Sorry, but that is simply not possible.  Each computer doing something, if you're connected or not, each tick every millisecond it's on.  If you could freeze the process somehow, you would also freeze the processes and services that would allow you to access the network. Geek Squad has been able to get the data out of the old and said that they install a new using a recovery on the old disk partition. (It was a HP 110-194 Office that we bought in December 2013 btw). When I went to pick it up, it was filled with acer software and a background of acer instead of HP. Why would this happen? Geek Squad claims they used what was on the drive hard and nothing else, and that HP has Acer that is why he was there. I can't check myself, however. Is this true? Why the Acer software on an HP computer?

  I don't think that HP is owner of Acer.  Looks like you found a evasive Geek Squad.  If they used a partition on a hard disk HP HP programs are only needed on this subject.

  Here's what I managed to do or find on the problem.
