I can't back up and would appreciate suggestions

First of all I'm not the best with technology. I was trying to save all of my computer on my external hard drive so that I can then put it on another computer. I have a simple xp computer that I use with my wife. We are the "directors. When I tried to download a message basically said that I have any authority. Here is the comment I received below. Any ideas would be appreciated

Critical files that make the System State have been properly backed up.

This backup set restore causes the failure of the system.

The operation was over.

You don't want to use the backup as so... (back-up software is to restore to the original pc if it won't and you switch to Mac, you don't want to...) If you run other programs on the xp you need to make sure that they are compatible Mac and reinstall them separately.

Make a copy of all your personal files to the external drive (put in a folder called 'Mac transfer' operating or similar so that you do not inadvertently copy any incompatible substance)... ensure that copies are good, and then copy those in the Mac... This should not take too long depending on how nuch material you have on xp. Don't forget to check everything you're going to make sure you copied it correctly and make a piece at a time (Documents - music - then Photos etc) so you can easily keep track.

I hope this makes you in the right direction.

Let me know if you need more detailed guidance... Best - R
