  The usual culprit is an anti-virus software - perhaps Avast!, AVG or Avira who has deleted or quarantined needed XP files as the file manager of Windows Session:

  c:\windows\system32\smss.exe

  I guess that the file might have been really infected and quarantined, but that has never been my experience.

  There is a copy of backup on your system. You just need to start somehow and replace it.

  Maybe someday the dialog box 'ask a question' forums XP will ask these questions automatically when a new thread is started so I don't have to ask every time.  It might even be possible to solve a problem in a single response when enough information is provided.

  I have a * Satellite A100 PSAAKL * that I bought in Thailand (by little girlfriend is thai, and let's do a lot). It came with Windows Vista, but I prefer Windows XP so I installed instead. But the hot keys does not work. So I can't change the brightness of the screen for example (it's a bit dark for my taste).

  I looked on the websites of the European and Asian Toshiba and find no download for this util HotKey for my model and for Windows XP. It is not at all? Or can I download the keyboard shortcut for a different model perhaps utility, and it will work for my model?

  Problem is that the software is stuff specific to country and Toshiba tools and utilities for European models will be designed in Europe and also tested on the European laptop models. They may work on some other models, but no one can say for sure. If they run properly this is nothing but good luck.

  I understand that you have downloaded macOS Sierra, but are not able to install it, because you are told that the download was corrupted. In a situation like this, the next step would be to remove existing installation application download and re - download.
