  Make sure that the system restore does not monitor the external drive.  SR does need to control the system drive and to the system drive, SR has only about 1 GB of space max.  Make a right click my computer and select properties then the System Restore tab to configure SR.

  Looks like you want to make a backup during import. If this is the case, you can designate a different location for a second copy when importing.

  

  1. Check the mark a second copy of box in the management of the files Panel and choose your external drive in the menu drop-down
  2. Then you set regular destination of Lightroom in the Destination panel.

  However, if you mean that you want in the foreground images in Lightroom, but have them physically located on an external drive, then all you need to do is choose this drive in the Destination panel. Lightroom Catalog can be on a different drive.

  Most of the readers come pre formatted to NTFS which is a format developed by Microsoft owner.  OS X natively can only read NTFS volumes and cannot write on NTFS volumes.  Some storage devices can integrate software that would write for OS X NTFS access.  If you have installed this software, then you will need to contact the manufacturer of the hard disk to see if there is an update available for the El Capitan.  Most of the software for OS X NTFS required an update to El Capitan.

  On some devices, USB storage, utility disk may not able to delete a volume under created factory card partition.  This can be solved by selecting the physical disk in the side bar disk utility, erasing first.  Once the physical disk has been erased, you should be able to create a new partition, and then format it in exFAT or HFS + (Mac OS Extended).

  Thank you for your message.  The problem you are having is because of differences in formatting between PC and Mac.  You can, however, transfer your files between the two.  I will set out what must be done under and limitations of each.
  First, you will need to format the drive on your PC.  When you format the PC, you can format it in FAT32 or NTFS.
  (You mentioned that you do not see the drive in the computer) To format drive:
  Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
  Click on "disk management".
  In the right pane, you should see your drive > you can then do a right click and 'format '.
  FAT32:
  This format will allow you to easily transfer files between the two.  This format becomes problematic when you transfer files more than 4 G.  There is a limit of 4 GB in FAT32, etc. of many movies are bigger than that and cannot be transferred using this format.
  NTFS
  This format has no size limitation, however, in its normal state it will be 'Read only' on Mac.  If you will not be able to transfer all the data itself.  While doing some research on the web, it seems that you can use a program called MacFuse on your Mac to change to NTFS files.  I have not confirmed this, but you can give it a try.  If this program works as planned, it would be the way to go.
