I can not start the print spooler as it says that the following file is missing.  C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe.  How can I download it?

Do a search on your computer, it may have been accidentally moved to another directory. You can also run the System File Checker:

or you can just try to copy the file from another computer.

The file is missing or corrupt is one of your files in the system registry.

By far, the best way to recover from this is to go to another computer and create a free Hirens Boot CD.
Download Hirens: <> http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/ > (link at the bottom of the icon of the disk)
    Hirens CD burning <> http://www.hirensbootcd.org/burning/ >

Once you create the CD, and then start your system of problem with this CD.  In the first window, select "Mini Windows XP" and wait for the system to start.  When it starts, go to the Hirens Boot CD menu and select
    Register-> Registry Restore Wizard.
then follow the prompts.  This wizard will return a copy of your registry database from backups that are stored with your system restore points.  After the restoration, stop, remove the CD and restart.

You will need a valid XP disc to run the repair.  It is possible that the PC manufacturer develop a recovery hard disk partition.  You should check with them to see if it's an option.  Also, some manufacturers will provide filtering alternative for a small fee. • Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

    System:

    Toshiba Satellite A-75

    WIndows XP Home Edition
Fully updated with Svc Pk 3
HITACHI Travelstar hard drive 80 gig

    Nice day

I'm getting this ' file is missing or damaged:------WINDOWS-SYSTEM32-CONFIG-SYSTEM ' error and Windows does not start in the F8 boot options. When I disable the auto reboot, I get a BSOD 51 registry error, consistent with the file "missing or corrupt" error Surprisingly "Recovery Console" works so I used to run chkdsk. This has not solved the problem, but even once, surprisingly, the utility reported no fixed error. Ok. I do research online (using another computer of course) and check out the many tips that I copy some files in my "c:\windows\repair" folder in the folder 'system '. Before I had time to do that, however, I found an article from Microsoft stating that this should not be done if you have an OEM System... what I'm doing. Apparently, hives system on these OEM installed OS set other passwords that can permanently block you on your records if you use this method. Thanks for the warning. My system restore disc is nothing more than a tool of re-insall OS that will wipe all my data in the process, and this is not desirable. Currently, I see again all my data on the drive by using the "recovery console". I'm ready to thread the needle on this one in the hope of re - access the operating system, although in some limited capacity. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you run chkdsk in RC, did you use the /r switch? This is the key! In other words, this should be the command:

    Chkdsk /r

(there is a space before the slash)

Moreover, KB307545 can be run safely on most OEM XP installations. Of course, nothing is guaranteed 100%.

Before you do this or else, you really must ensure all data is stored safely. One way to do this is to start on a live Linux CD and then copy the files to an external hard drive. Another way is to connect the problem hard drive into a working PC and copy the files in this way. This could be done by the servo drive or with an adapter like this:

    Hi Derek,.

For the hard disk with the error message, try the steps mentioned in the article given below to resolve this issue:

Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your computer has an OEM operating system. The hive system on OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article, you may not be able to log in the recovery console to restore the original registry hives.

    Hello everyone
I received this display error months back & tried everything I can try.
I formatted and reinstalled OP system.
After days of view, it was back again re-formatted & installed.

Please help before I go to different OP.

    Thank you

    dirsal,
If this error comes back after a format/reinstall complete so there are a few things to look at.  First thing I would check is the material.  If you can boot into Safe Mode with command prompt, or if you have a XP CD and you can boot into the Recovery Console, and then run the following command.

    Chkdsk /r

You can also test your RAM as well as with the Memory Diagnostic.

If there is no problem found with any material then I would like to know if, after installation, you load any other software.

Let us know the results of the digitization of the material and the requested info.

  • My computer does not start. The text on the screen is: Windows didn't start because the following file is missing or corrupted: \WINDOWS\system32\c_437.nls.

I tried to boot from the system cd, but nothing happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Wilma Jean,
Thanks for posting in the Microsoft answers Forum.  The first thing you need to check is that your PC is set to boot from the CD.  The boot order is set in the BIOS and check the PC manufacturer for instructions on how to change it.  Once you are ready to start from the CD drive first, and then boot from the XP CD in Recovery Console.  This link explains how to start the recovery console: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654#3

Once you start the recovery console, I would say the following two commands (links after the controls give explanations\instruction thereon) running.

Chkdsk /r http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 (the instructions explain running cmd on the start menu, you will not need to do this step)

Everything started after I ran scan and scan deleted some files infected. However, I can use the system. Where and how to download the missing files? Or how the system does not deliver messages?

Two of the three files are probably part of the malware infection and not the files infected. The third is probably the same details in this link:

To identify what loads when you start using Autoruns (freeware from Microsoft).
    http://www.Microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns, you can deselect an item which disables startup, or you can click with the right button on an item, then remove it. If you clear the check box that you can check back for re - activate the element. It is an approach much safer than editing the registry and better than using msconfig. You will find the three points and they will have a description 'file is missing' against everyone. Your antivirus software has removed the files, but not the startup entries in the registry. All you need to do is delete the entry using Autoruns to eliminate the error messages.

Another useful feature of the program is that you can click with the right button on an item and select search online to get information about the selected item.

You must first start on doing something so USB drive a bootable Hiren.

    Here's how:

I'll recommend you use Hiren boot CD (it will go also to a flash/USB stick/USB).

It's good for you, because there a lot of tools more on that on the Recovery Console CD of XP, doesn't your administrator passwords and you will not have to futz round in your BIOS, if any afflicted system has SATA drives - Hiren can deal with this.

You will have a bunch of great tools that you have in XP... Recovery Console an editor of the register, adjustable password and an office that resembles Windows XP so you will feel comfortable flexibility.

You can easily copy your personal data (documents, pictures, music) to an external drive.

A system of work, start by downloading the latest version on Hiren Boot CD from here (it is a substantial download but worth it):
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/    (look to the bottom of the page).

Unzip the Hiren to a folder where you can find it.  There's a Hiren. BootCD.15.x.iso that you have to then.

Hiren was instructed to make a bootable USB drive that you can use, but it takes you first burn the .iso to a CD image file and a few other measures, so I suggest another way and here's how:

Download RUFUS 1.3.2 or whatever the latest version is here (read a few things on the page so you can learn more on this subject):

    http://Rufus.AKEO.IE/

I will warn to be careful that don't accidentally format you a hard disk - don't forget your USB key is in and know what the drive letter!  This part makes me still a little nervous, so be careful.

Launch of RUFUS and all default values should be fine for the device, choose letter of your USB drive, quick tag format FAT32, it if you want and in the Format options box, click on the little icon that looks like a CD and a window will open.  Navigate through this dialogue to point to the folder that contains the Hiren. BootCD.15.x.iso that you have unpacked above and the box should change to say the image ISO (RUFUS includes the Hiren ISO file).

Double check you have the right device selected in the top (NOT you HDD) click Start, acknowledge receipt of the warning and let it finish (it will take a little time) it copies the files.   Hiren ISO is also a good size.

When RUFUS is finished, it will say "DONE" at the bottom.

Put the USB in the afflicted machine and reset/reboot and regardless of the button you press to get a boot menu where you can select the USB drive as first boot device (it's F11 for me).  If you do not see a start menu choice, you will need to set your BIOS to boot from USB first instead of the HARD disk.

When the Hiren menu displays, choose the XP Mode of Mini and it will start loading (slowly from a USB key) and finally, you should see a windowsy looking for office.  You should recognize the part and feel uncomfortable, but it is not your office - the office of the Hiren!

Remember: you do not start on your hard drive, - you started in the Office of the Hiren.

A way to check the drive for errors is to open my computer and right-click on your afflicted player and choose Properties, tools, error, check checking now... put a check mark in the boxes and then start.

Sometimes that works, then you can also click on start, run and in the type box:

    cmd

Click OK to open a command prompt window and enter the following command (assuming that XP is installed on your C drive)

    CHKDSK c: /r

This disk check can last a long time (perhaps several to several hours) depending on the size of the volume, the amount of data on the volume and what the disk check finds to do.  You may need to run more than once.

This problem occurred when we had a short break this morning.  How can I use a CD when the computer does not start?

    Thank you!

Firstly try to get the menu Advanced Boot Options by pressing F8 repeatedly while booting.  See if you can boot into 'Safe Mode' or 'last good known Configuration"before trying the method described below.

If you have a Windows XP installation CD, instead of a CD of "recovery" provided by a computer manufacturer, you configure the BIOS of the computer to boot from the CD, put the XP installation CD in the drive, start the XP Recovery Console and go from there.

See below for detailed instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

There are several caveats to this method.  Read the article.
