Why can't upgrade to SP3 on xp?
I was trying to update my windows xp with service pack 3, and after the installation, it tried to restart but would not, I had to perform a system restore. What happened twice. Why?
Hi Numba,
1. you receive messages or error codes?
2. how you try to install Service Pack 3?
This occurs when the Service pack installs. You can check the following items to take the necessary precautions before installing Service pack 3 (SP3) and try to install the stand-alone package of SP3.

My hard drive is filled with thousands of uninstall files and folders while he was trying to upgrade my operating system to SP3. I want to wipe the hard drive and reinstall xp and other software. My system drive is XP SP1. Can I reinstall this version and then go online to upgrade to SP3?
I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 5100 with a Pentium 4 processor and 1 GB of RAM (maximum). I don't think that I have the option to upgrade to windows 7.
While Windows XP with SP1/SP1a or SP2 is no longer "supported" - it's just a matter of installing Windows XP patched SP3 to fall in this category 'supported '.My suggestion - to make things simple - if you install cleanly, simply download and install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP first. Reboot several times. Then, download and then install Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. Reboot several times. Then start visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and continue to install post-SP3 90 updates +.Windows XP SP2 for it professionals (it really does work for everyone)

I can't install the SP3 from Microsoft Update Center
I can't install the SP3 from Microsoft Update Center. So I contacted Microsoft Support and ran diagnostic scan tool and sent the results. They send e-mail attachment reset_subinacle. It's done. FAILED. I tried 3 times and 2 days later... still cannot copy beethov9.wma. file. So now what should I do to get this SP3 on my son's computer? My son has enough disk space for SP3 and I made sure and prepared for this installation. Does anyone know what I need to do? Help!
Ideas:
- You have problems with programs
- Error messages
- Recent changes to your computer
- What you have already tried to solve the problem

Yes, I'm familiar with your recent discussions on this particular computer as well as the fact that he gave to your son as a used computer. Be so familiar with the history of this computer, I feel confident in saying he was already infected when he gave your son.
I fear that the only way to get this computer secure and fully patched to Windows Update will be formatting the hard drive - and then do a clean install of Windows.
Since you don't have the disks that originally came with the computer (and assuming that the original owner would have given them to you when gave you the computer if there were), we must assume (or at least to cross our fingers and hope) that there is a hidden restore partition that could be used to return the computer to the condition it was before first it left the factory. I can assure you that can support Dell & will help you, if not directly through the Dell Community forum:http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514.aspx
Follow the instructions below:
Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows. Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) won't fix this!
HOW to do a clean install of Windows XP: see method 1 and http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307
Once installed the clean, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care ofeverything on the next page before otherwise connect the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) and before using a flash drive or the SD card that is not brand new, or has not been freshly formatted:

NB: No matter what Norton or McAfee free trial which is preinstalled on the computer when you bought will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free AND download/run the removal tool appropriate prior to installing the updates, Windows Service Packs or IE upgrades AND BEFORE installing your new anti-virus application (which will require WinXP SP3 must be installed).

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, good reputation and stand-alone computer (that is, not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) repair facility. Expect to pay about $150 USD (or more) for this service.

XP Professional SP2 fails to upgrade to SP3
I need help. I'm trying to upgrade my Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 computer to Service Pack 3. I tried three different methods to upgrade, but all have failed, each with its own unique error. Here is what I tried:
Windows Update: I have just a simple message: "the following components could not be installed: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929).
Microsoft Download Center (ie: offline installation manual): the moment I opened the EXE file, I get this message: "Extraction failed: file is corrupt." This affects that regular and even the controlled version. Windows also identifies the file as having an invalid signature.
ISO file: There is also a version on CD-ROM to upgrade to SP3. The first time I tried it, I got this message: "Setup could not copy the file shell32.dl_." The second time, I get a message "Setup could not copy the file ati2mtag.sy_." Because installation can not continue without these copied files, I had no choice but to give up and roll back to SP2. Strangely, there is an option to uninstall SP3 from the Control Panel Add/Remove programs. When I used it, the uninstall program hung on "Catalogs of restoration", where I was forced to make a stop of the force. Now my CD/DVD player may not work when Windows XP is used. There's work, however, during boot time. So I know my drive CD/DVD is not defective.
No matter what method I use, Windows XP Service Pack 3 still not able to install correctly. I need installed SP3 because there are two programs that I use called VOB2MPG and Adobe Photoshop. These programs will not work with SP2; I have installed SP3.
The computer I use is a Dell Dimension 2400. Method of installation of Windows is done by the CD/DVD drive.
How can I upgrade to Windows XP SP3?
It is not an HP computer. It's a Dell Dimension 2400. Let me to you a link to his page drivers and downloads, it should have an image of the computer: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19
My computer BIOS is A05, and this is the final version of this computer. Updates for my computer has since been abandoned.
How about I rephrase the question differently: if I install a pirated version of XP with SP3 and Windows asks me to validate subsequently, can I use my valid product key? I have now this thinking that my XP CD has some nasty bugs.
No need to restate the question - the answer must be the same here. If you are using a pirated version of WIndows you don't know what you found actually. Things * might * have been changed at this level - leaving you permanently "tapped" essentially.
Integrate Windows XP Service Pack 3 into your original/actual installation CD and install use.

Hello
Please follow the steps mentioned below and let us know if that helps you.
Step 1: First we will analyze the system for infections using the Microsoft Security Scanner which can be downloaded from the link below:
http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: You can lose data while eliminating malware.
Also check if your system has been hijacked:
http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc700813.aspxStep 2: Run System File Checker.
(a) open command prompt. To do this, click Start, click programs, accessories principally made, right-click Guest, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.
(b) type the following command and press ENTER:
(c) sfc/scannowThe sfc/scannow command. analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.
Step 3: Download Windows XP SP3 manually Microsoft Web site and save it to your desktop:
Disable the security software and implement the system in clean boot. After that, run Service Pack 3 installation by double-clicking on the file that you downloaded.
Try now to the KB article to perform the clean boot:
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/310353Important: After you use the clean boot in order to solve your problem follow the steps in the "steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state" section to start your system in normal mode. Be sure to activate security software after installation and the system.
