  I have a Satellite P200-140. The DVD/CD Player plays all DVDs without problem. However, it does not read CD. A message 'no disc' appears.
  I've updated the drivers, cleaned the lens, completed all the normal tasks.

  Maybe you should try to remove the capital letters and lowerfilters in the registry, because you can often read here in the forum:

  (1) run regedit (Start-Run-Regedit online online)
  2) navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  (3) in the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key and delete the key "LowerFilters".
  (4) restart.

It can read and burn the disc, that I already used, but when it's a new (disc white) it does not read the disc.  It has an error message "make sure that the disc uses a format windows recognizes. If the drive is not formatted, you must format it before you use it. "the disc is the format that would recognize the system.  I tried to uninstall the drivers and reinstalled from the Device Manager, but nothing works, tried too much microsoft fixit, always the same.  Hope that there is another work around here...   CD/DVD players use different lasers for reading/writing DVD from the CD.  All indications would point to your laser DVD as having failed.  You could try to remove your drive and install it in another computer to see if the problem follows your player or your computer, but my bet is that the drive must be replaced.

• My CD/DVD drive does not read and is therefore no longer is visible on my computer, the BIOS or Device Manager.

  I just realized when inserting a CD, he has not read. I havn't he used in awhile, so it can't just happen. When I insert the CD you can hear it spin and green light flashes, but after about 10-15 seconds it stops and the light goes out. Under 'My Computer', I see more player. I don't see the driver CD/DVD option in my Device Manager menu longer, and I do not see it in the BIOS. I have a HP Pavilion Labtop.

  I suggest you check the steps.and following if it helps.

  Perform the check and the clean boot if you have the problem.
  a. click Start, type msconfig in the search box and press ENTER.
  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on continue.
  b. on the general tab, click Selective startup.
  c. under Selective startup, click on to clear the load startup items check box.
  d. click on the Services tab, click to select the hide all Microsoft Services check box and then click disable all.
  e. click OK.
  f. When you are prompted, click restart.
  g. after the computer starts, check if the problem is resolved.
