Given that it's a Dell and it came with Windows XP pre-installed, it's an OEM of Windows version.  The biggest drawback of an OEM version (at least in the USA) is that its license it permanently binds to the computer first it is installed on.   I have a Dell Dimension 2400. The computer crashed and the computer shows now no hard drive installed. I removed the hard drive and put it in one of my other computers, and my computer does not recognize the drive as a hard disk.

  I put another hard drive in my Dell, (same 40 MB; but different mfg) and the new hard drive is not recognized as a hard drive. I go into the configuration and it shows the diskette and cd installed, but not installed hard drive. Looking at the motherboard, is there that one connection for HDD in these models, so cannot plug into any other manor. Put the jumper to master on and cable that SELECT on but again Dell shows no HDD installed.

  The orig Dell hard drive, does not present as a drive in my work computer, but I'm trying to replace it with that.

  When I insert the OS disc that came with the system, it starts repairing and loads the files, but cannot format the hard drive and doesn't declare any installed hard drive.

  Assuming that the drive hard orig failed, and the new hard drive is a drive to work, are there specifics on something special that needs to be done when you install a new hard drive in a Dell Dimension 2400? I am unable to find all the technical manuals on how to install a new hard drive in my Dell, even though I have all of the orig CD that came from Dell.

  Any help/thoughts would be appreciated.

  It seems that my problem is solved.
  I removed a lot of the years of updates then run my drive setup and turned off and went to bed.
  When I turned on this morning I had to install updates. It was the only thing I was worried, and as this seems to be fixed, I am glad I use Firefox as my browser.

  I installed Speccy and he ran and it shows as running windows updates and it works correctly.

  You can also download free IrfanView.  It is a very handy utility.  It allows you to open and view a wide variety of image file formats and also has the capability of the bulk renaming of files and - for your current number - capture screen images and prints them out.
