I have a hp mini 110-1030 ca running win xp 2 GB of ram that is faulty. Have tried everything without success.

Local tech said that I demand a new hd for a cost of $130.  Can't afford that. Happy to provide more information on request. Desperate at this point. My computer recognizes the external hard drive, it works normally. Don't want to make this post long and to use more space. First display was screwed up-images spread out of sight, had to scroll. Reinstal attempt of bone using hp disks.first, started in safe mode: speed increased remarkably (normally). When started using win xp choices in the bios, bad performance returned. have tried everything else.  is reformatting the hd my last option, can I reinstall the OS back?

It is difficult to understand, from your description, what is your problem.  What is your view or is it a slow response?  When computers are running OK in Mode safe mode but not in Normal Mode, it is usually caused by a program that runs at startup in Normal Mode but not in Mode without failure.  To debug this type of problem, you must use "msconfig" to enable / disable startup items until you find the source of the problem.

Whenever you think that disk errors, the first thing you can do is run "chkdsk" with the /F or/r option (or use one of the boxes, if using the graphical user interface).  WARNING: It will be after the next reboot, takes usually 1 to 2 hours (or more if there is a lot of drive problems) and can not be interrupted.
