Hello
As you say he fell - there is possibility that your media is damaged. You can try one thing - Incase you are lucky - open the suitcase and see the hard drive is connected / fixed tight to the connector and then attach the cable to the PC to see if you can access the drive. Otherwise, you will have to go for data recovery.

An Acrobat.com account is free! You can register here: https://cloud.acrobat.com. (Other services online Acrobat.com to create and export of files PDF - but they are completely optional).
Just make sure that you also get the free software Adobe Reader app on your iPad.
