  Did you install Ubuntu?

  If so, you will need to get a drive OEM from a friend and use your key.  Make sure that it is a key OEM and OEM disk during installation.

  No, you cannot use your support Dell/HP OEM to install XP on a generic computer built. Installation media more computers brand is locked in BIOS for motherboard of that OEM (Dells are). In addition, most HPs have just a recovery disc and not a real disk operating system. As for using the product key you have, it's from the CD that you used initially install XP on the generic construction machine? If so, will need you a corresponding version installation CD; namely the retail Home/Pro/MCE or generic OEM Home/Pro/MCE.

  Borrow an OEM Windows CD (it must be OEM) and install it using your product key. (You can make a copy of it for your future use - this isn't the CD you pay because it's the product key). A generic OEM CD maybe not some or all the drivers you need you would be safe to download from the website of the provider first.

  The example you give is not a product key.  It's a product ID.  A product ID is simply the string generated by Windows when it is installed and serves a different purpose than you think.  A product ID, it is not what is used to activate Windows.  This requires a chain of 25 characters (five fields of five) that you find on the COA sticker attached to the housing of your computer (or in some newer laptops battery).
