I have almost 40 000 emails! Help!

Hello Yes! I have a big problem that I can't solve everything. On my PC, it says I have no unread emails but on my Iphone 5, it says that I have almost 40 000! I use gmail and I had this problem for 2 years and it really does not use a lot of space on my phone and I need someone help!
