  The news is that I managed to solve the problem with the "Microsoft Fix it Wizard" of your referenced KB doc.  To make a long story short longer that might be: I had downloaded and crossed the 4 solutions on the referenced error 1714 page, which, at that time, did not provide an answer for me.  So almost ignored your advice, I decided to give it a try again.  I ran the "Microsoft Fix it Wizard" as I previously got it with the option of impossible to uninstall the program and again once she failed.  I restarted it under the option of unable to update/install program and wall - ah, he finds and fix registry problems.  Then, I was able to download the latest version of Acrobat Reader...

  Run the cleanup tool "Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat tool - Adobe Labs' first to remove all traces of Reader installed on your machine.

  Under control panel, programs & features, it has no option to select ' Uninstall/Change/repair.  I have not had any problems before with the help of this feature.     I've done some uninstalling programs a few weeks ago.    Is it possible that I can have uninstalled the program "uninstall" in error?   Or y at - it such a program?   If there is and that's what's happened, can I get back by returning to the system restore using the date of my possible error?    If this isn't the case, any suggestions on how I fix this?  At this stage I can't remove all the programs.

  Thanks again for your response.   After trying your suggestion and go through the process twice and then give up, this afternoon my function is back on.   I now have my uninstall/change/repair under my programs and features.    It seems to work again.    I really appreciate your help.

  I downloaded Adobe on my Mac with OS X a few weeks ago, everything was fine and I was able to use it until I opened it last night to view a document and it froze just for no apparent reason. I have tried EVERYTHING to close the application or even uninstall it but nothing will work. I tried the command-Q, I tried to shut down my computer or restart it, but every time I try it says Adobe prevents my computer from closing. I also can't open the files on Adobe Reader, because it tells me that it is already open, and I have to close it first to use it. Even when I try to uninstall in my Finder Applications it will not work.

  Could you please let us know if Adobe Reader freezes when you open a specific pdf file or with all the pdf files?

  Try the steps mentioned below:

  1. disable protected mode, launch Reader > click on the Edit menu, and then click (protection) > click on protected mode > and then click on turn off > OK.

  2 - if that isn't working, perform the steps here: How to reset preference settings in Acrobat format.

  Let us know if the above given not worked.

  The normal download for installation of Player isn't final setup, this is a download manager to download the actual installer. Especially on Mac OS X, which doesn't seem to work reliable in all cases.   I suggest you unregister and re-register the windows service installed on your computer and check if it helps you fix Windows install error problem and if you can install updates for Adobe Acrobat Reader.

  A. click on the Start menu, click on run.
  (B) in the Open box, type msiexec /unreg and then press ENTER.
  (C) in the Start menu, click run.
  (D) in the Open box, type msiexec/regserver, and then press ENTER.

  Restart the computer and try to install the updates to check if the process worked.
