  On what update did you get the error code? Check the history of update Windows for the exact number of KB.

  1) click on the Start Menu.
  2) click on all programs.
  (3) when the window opens, click view update history in the upper left corner of the window.

  This gives the full list of recently made updates and also the status of the installation as if the update installed successfully or not.

  If you have not updated, take note of the corresponding article.

  Now visit http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx , enter the KB article number and download the update of the same.
  More often than otherwise, it should get installed from the download above.

  Just in case you have trouble to install the same, consider resetting your Windows Update components after which the installation from the source folder.

  Click automated Microsoft Fix it to reset the components automatically.

  In addition, with the new quick release cycle, the update process has changed. For example, the firefox 8 which was released several months ago is the same 8 Firefox there today. For some releases there maybe an update minor to fix one or two issues, but usually known bugs has waited until the next version which will be fixed. So unlike before, when you could run Firefox 3.5.x for looking after 3.6 was released, and the old version have always updated, this story has changed now.

  My problem is on an old computer (not this one) running Windows Vista Home Premium.  Show downloads are KB2690729, 2656353, 2656370, 2604111, 2604121, 2656368, 2656045 and 2686827.  When I tried to download individually, the first and the third update (above) showed as being downloaded correctly, yet when I checked the list of updates successfully, none of these appeared.  Since that time, the system generated downloads 8 updates have been fruitless.

  Like the other reviewers, I run IOL System Mechanic and have noted your comments about the interaction between the SM and windows.  Personally, I hesitate to attempt changes to the registry based on the stories of war, with that I've heard of people who do not have the knowledge/experience/skill to work in the more than causing registty problems they started.  I have not contacted LIO, wondering if this was done either by Microsoft with others who have similar problems.

  I hope that you have more tips to share what to do: this problem.
