Method 4: Use the Recovery Console

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/) how to back up and restore the registry in Windows

If you cannot remove Windows XP SP3 by using one of the previous methods, follow these steps:

    1. Insert the Windows XP CD in the CD drive or in the DVD drive and restart your computer. When you receive the following message appears, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD:

Press any key to boot from CD

Note The computer must be configured to boot from the CD or the DVD player drive. For more information on how to configure your computer to start from the CD or the DVD player drive, refer to the documentation that came with your computer or contact the computer manufacturer. Alternatively, you can use a Windows XP boot disk. For more information, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

305595 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305595/) how to create a boot disk for an NTFS or FAT partition in Windows XP
  • When you receive the Welcome to Setup message, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Note Several options will be displayed on the screen.

  • Select the correct installation of Windows XP.

Note You must select a number before you press ENTER, or the computer will restart. Generally speaking, only the 1: C:\Windows is available.

  • If you are prompted to type a password to admin, do. If you do not know the administrator password, press ENTER. (As a general rule, the password is empty.)

Note Do not continue if you do not have the administrator password.

  • At the command prompt, type cd $ntservicepackuninstall$ \spuninst, and then press ENTER.
  • At the command prompt, type batch spuninst.txt, and then press ENTER.

Note The Spuninstal.txt file appears. As the file scrolls down, you will see errors and files that are copied. It is a normal behavior.

  • After Windows XP SP3 is removed, type exit and press ENTER.
  • Restart the computer in safe mode. To do this, press F8 when the computer restarts.

Note After you restart the computer, the computer may stop responding, and you will see a black screen. The mouse works. In this case, restart the computer by turning off the computer, and then turn it back on. The second reboot allows you to open a session.

  • When the computer restarts, Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) does not run and the icons of Windows and the Start button are unavailable. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
    1. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE and then click Task Manager in the Windows security screen.
    2. Click file, and then click new task (run).
    3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs
    5. In the Details pane, right-click ObjectName, click modify, type LocalSystem in the data value box and then click OK.
    6. Restart the computer

  • I have Windows Vista and back up regularly on E:drive. How do backups more space?

I have Windows Vista. I've been using the backup of the standard sytem on my E: drive for several months. Now it is almost full, and it seems impossible to remove previous copies. I tried the suggested disk cleanup and it shows 0 bytes available to remove! I also tried to delete "system restore and shadow copies in 'Disk cleanup'." It seems to be a lot of disk activity, but no more space on drive E:! I also tried to manually remove some files, but they disappear from the index of free space on the disk does not increase. Can you help me, please?

Is there anything else stored on drive E, other than backups? Otherwise, you might save a few headaches and just format your partition to backup.

    Warning

    • Formatting a volume will destroy all data on the partition. Be sure to make backups of all the data to save before you begin.

    • You cannot format a disk or partition that is currently in use, including the partition that contains Windows.

    • Quick format is a formatting option that creates a new file table, but do not completely overwrite or erase the volume. A quick format is much faster than a normal format, which fully erases the existing data on the volume.

    1. Open Computer Management by clicking on the button start , clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools and then double-click computer management.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    2. In the Navigation pane, under storage, click Disk Management.

    3. Right-click the volume you want to format and then click on format.

    4. To format the volume with the default settings in the dialog box format, click OK, and then click OK again.

For more information about the formatting of a partition, see create and format a hard disk partition.

  • Get the error 0x8024001e in Windows 8 while trying to update and install new applications on the Windows Store

    Hello.

I wonder if anyone knows why I get 0x8024001e error while trying to update applications or installation of new applications in the app Store of Windows, because it is really frustrating. Also I was wondering why it isn't a place where I can easily find the error codes which means.
Apps status shows "Download", but the progress bar does not move. Not sure if this is a bug too, but one of my apps (Skydrive) disappeared from my screen, probably due to me trying to update my applications.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Have an old iCloud ID trying to update an application

The App Store tells me that I have to update an application.  When I click on update, it's invited me to an old, no longer in use iCloud ID (which I suppose than the one that I used when I first bought this app).  I don't remember the password for the old.  I tried disconnecting and then in again to iCloud on my Mac with my current iCloud ID, but I received the same prompt.  Any ideas?  Thank you very much.

You can either get this password reset or delete and redownload the application; the old Apple ID is stored inside.

  • I have Windows Vista Business Edition. What I need to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional or can it be any version of Windows 7?

I currently have vista 32 professional and I want to upgrade to windows 7, I understand that I must use windows 7 Professional

is this correct and just use the regular windows 7 pro upgrade disc?

original title: Vista Business 32 - windows 7

If you want to make a room upgrade, you can use Windows 7 Pro 32-bit - you can buy and use the upgrade version. You can also buy Home Premium, but will need to perform a custom installation.

Then my computer run Windows 7?
Basic system requirements are listed below.  Features have additional requirements.

    • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x 86) or 64-bit (x 64) processor

    • 1 gigabyte (GB) of RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

    • 16 GB of disk space available (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

    • Graphical device DirectX 9 with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Run Windows Upgrade Advisor to see if there are known problems that might affect installation and if you need to install the 32-bit or the 64 bit version of Windows 7.
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/UpgradeAdvisor

    Installation - 'upgrade' means what?
Upgrade means that you can install Windows 7 simply by inserting the Windows 7 upgrade software in the DVD drive of your PC and follow the instructions on the screen. While you are not required to backup and reinstall your files, or reinstall your programs, it is a very good idea to back up your files and settings before you start any upgrade to the software. Get more information on the software updates and best practices .

Installation - what does "Custom (Clean)" Mean?
A custom (clean) installation clears the contents of the hard drive of your PC. Your files, settings, and programs will not be transferred to Windows 7. This means that to install Windows 7, you must:

    • Back up any files and settings you want to keep

    • Install Windows 7

    • Reinstall all your files

    • Reinstall all the programs you want to use.

These four steps take time, skills, techniques and Windows Easy Transfer can help. However, if you are not comfortable with this process, please consider having the installation carried out by a local service provider.

  • Close the port 455, is it necessary? I have windows firewall IT and using Windows Essentials.

How to close port 445?  Should it be closed? What effect will have open/closed? I am a novice user and understand many uses and ways to configure certain parts of my computer. This open port sparked yet another in the functioning of my PC. Thank you Jerome.

I can't imagine why you would want to do and I have no intention of frelling with any of my Windows machines to try it for you. If you feel better close your port 455, simply use the Windows Firewall to do. You must take the advice of Steve Gibson with a grain of salt. If your computer is clean, you have a good antivirus installed, you are using a firewall, are behind a router and practice "Safe Hex" then find something else to worry about. But that's just my opinion.
