I'm running on xp and my media player11 won't play DVDs but will play CD and burn
don't know if the codex is missing or hardware is broken
WMP11 already play DVDs?
Maybe you need a DVD decoder:
(FWIW... it's always a good idea to create a system)
Restore point before installing software or updates)
Info about DVD decoders:
Plug-ins for Windows Media Player
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/downloads/Windows-Media-Player/plug-ins Or you could try one of the following free media players
who should read DVDs:
VLC Media Player
http://www.videolan.org/
Media Player Classic
http://www.filehippo.com/download_media_player_classic/
(just unzip and run it... (no installation required)
Media Player Classic Home Cinema
http://MajorGeeks.com/Media_Player_Classic_Home_Cinema_d6213.html
(works on XP/Vista/7)
Another option would be to download and install one of
the following Codec Packs:
* Proceed at your own risk *.

I tried to reinstll cumulative update 2 for Windows XP Media Center 2005 that has worked for me the last time I had this problem, but now I get the Error Message "you must have Windows XP Media Center 2005 installed to get this download and it shows already on my computer as installed components. When I reinstalled it 3 years ago he corrected the problem of DVD. Help, please
Thank you for your help. Here are the answers your request:

KB article: WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325 - usa .exe
The windows of origin is always on display as shown above, but I received a free upgrade to Windows XP Professional CD and installed on my computer. And under 'Information system', it shows as - Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3.This problem started about 10 days when I used the CD of XP Professional to correct a problem. My computer is a Dell Dimension 5100 and I have two CDs that were sent to me - Dell - Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP 3 and Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with update Rollup 2.
Thanks again and I ran the "fix it" you suggested but it have no problem found to fix. Every thing works fine on my system, but Media Center won't play DVD. It will play CDs and videos on my system.
The initial problem was that I could not download the Blackberry Desktop Software - updates needed. The computer came with Windows XP Media Center Edition Home and I use Internet Explorer 8 as my default browser. I also use Mozilla Firefox as my backup browser.
Please stick to your thread to avoid confusion of origin: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/i-have-upgraded-to-windows-xp-professional-and-now/f5245962-e9b4-4415-8aff-bc1d972f8120
Note that I asked you to MOVE your original thread on the forum of material WinXP, not start a new thread.
Also note that you don't have NO Windows XP Media Center Edition, installed now if you upgraded to Windows XP Professional.
PS: If "winver" still says Windows XP Media Center Édition, did you not correctly upgraded & something is not. Better contact the Dell Support on this issue (if they'll still talk to you).

Windows Media Center won't play DVD
Windows Media Center won't play DVD. This program has played these exact DVD in September. These DVDs can be played on other devices. Error message indicates that there is a problem with the decoder, but don't tell me the code of error message. I searched other forums, but it is impossible to find an answer to this problem, except the recommendation of a codec - although I don't know how I "lost" the codec in the month. Microsoft Security Essentials have installed and up to date, if it is not a virus. Have problems in other programs with the recognition of previously readable files. Not sure if it's related, so I'll post in separate... forums but I'll give you a link if you want to. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hello cowgurlup55,
In addition to the response of Santosh, please relay if the problem occurs when you play a DVD or a single. Please also relay if the same problem occurs when you try to play the DVD with Windows Media Player.
In addition, if you have an extra DVD decoder installed, then try to update the DVD decoding software.

Having too many CD/DVD programs can cause strange problems, especially if they're loading of parts of
themselves at the start because they will be competing for resources. This does not mean that this issue has been
caused by those, however, it's a possibility depending on which and how many you have installed. You have disk problems as the CD/DVD is actually 4 discs in 1 case (CD & DVD burning and)

correctly.Burning at low speed, or by using the master could help. A CD/DVD cleaner might help.
Brand of the CD or DVD drive can also be the problem. Low quality (cheap brands) are always problematic.
CD/DVDs have a tolerance + - and your can read/write on the edge outside these discs
tolerances. They may be delivered, but it is generally more economical to replace the disk.Several good info here:

My Window Media Player won't play WMA files
Hi, only come to find out that my Player Windows Media won't play WMA files - they used to! She still plays MP3 files, so his works, and it will play WMA files through my Denon AV receiver when I send them this Windows Media Player for her. And when the WMA files are copied in my SD card, they play in my car stereo.
It says 'Windows Media Player has encountered a problem reading the file' and puts a little red cross next to him.
I have not installed anything, was only made updates windows update regularly. Running Windows 7 with the current version of Windows Media Player - said current when running try to update.
What's wrong?
Thank you.
Linda.

Windows media player won't recognize dvd playback or record
My Media Player will not play it plays the cd and burn cd dvd if I try windows Director, acknowledges that the dvd drive is there but it will not record or play videos
The reader has already worked? If it used to work OK but suddenly failed, then there's a chance (the DVD part of) the drive has failed. You could try a CD/DVD cleaner lens to see if that helps.
It may be interesting to try this fixit MS - http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/ and run the built-in utility to see if they find and fix anything.
I guess that its listed as 'work' and showing no problem in the device (on the Panel) Manager?, but its worth checking.
It may also be useful to check on the support site for the PC see if there are updates made support for the PC and player. These can sometimes help.

Media usage rights acquisition.
I can't plays music, that I bought in the past. I also don't remember the user name and password with the fact that he said that I signed. In fact, I don't remember signing up! I have Media Player 11 update and that seems to be the moment where I lost the rights of acquisition, but this is not certain.
