  I know this may seem a simple/stupid question, but I do not understand what are "Service Packs".  I don't know much about computers.

  I have restored my laptop to the factory setting today and I reinstall my programs again.  I am trying to install a new program as well (Autodesk Inventor 2012).  The installation says I can't because I need Service Pack 2 and I only have Microsoft Vista Home Premium (Version: 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001).

  What are Service Packs?  Can I upgrade to Service Pack 2 for free?  If yes how?  If I update it will help or hinder my system?  Any pack is better than another?

  You can install Service Pack 2 very simply - go to Windows Update and check for new updates - then install all available updates.

  Once they are complete, return again (after a reboot) and do the same thing - repeat until there are no left.

  Along the way you will be installed Service pack 2 :)

  I'm trying to uninstall Windows XP Service Pack 3 from my laptop.   I went on the site of microsoft and tried all different methods.  Method 1 did not show a Windows XP Service Pack 3.  Method 2 says "file not found".  Method 3 was only in April 2012.  I do not know the Service Pack has been installed before this, but I don't know when. I did a search of file for spuninst and found 142 records.  141 of them were in the folder Windows/Software/Distribution/download.  The last was in system32 folder/Preinstall.

  The computer is a Server 2003 and the initial install was XP Service Pack 1.  It was used for several years by my daughter, then sat for a few years.  I started again in October 2011.

  I want to uninstall the Service Pack, because I use a software that does not work properly under XP3.  The company said return to XP2 to remove bugs or improve the software to operate with any other operating system.  It would cost me a few thousand dollars.

  Since I was reinstalling XP Professional SP1 CD, it is possible that I can start all over again?

  According to this page, Janome Digitizer 10000 is not officially support in any version of Windows XP (although messages in the community of Janome forums say it works in Windows XP SP2 that you have discovered).

  If you have 2 choices:

  1 Uninstall SP3 (if possible), continue to use Digitizer 10000 but then never, NEVER connect the computer to internet at all!

  2. let SP3 and all post-SP3 installed but purchase updates & install (or upgrade to) Janome Digitizer Pro/MB (or higher).  [I found upgrades for as little as USD via Google $499].

  Note: Depending on where you bought the Windows XP computer, it might have are with WinXP SP3 preinstalled. If this is the case, you cannot uninstall SP3.
