I'm unable to access the files on my external hard drive

I have an external hard drive and can't read the files. The device appears on my PC, but no file shows when I go to the device and equipment. My PC is not recover this unit and only not recognize it as a USB device. I can see this under the folder hardware and devices, but there is no entry. Is there a way to access the files or retrieve files? The material of the driver is up-to-date.

Hello

Try to connect the external hard drive on another computer / USB and check.

If you are able to access the files on the other computer, and then try to update the drivers for the chipset of your computer.

You can visit the website of the manufacturer of the computer to get the chipset drivers.

Thank you.

  • Trying to access the files on an external hard drive in XP with Vista... Access denied.

My old laptop with XP died, so I purchased an external drive and installed my old hard drive in it. I now use Vista, but whenever I try to access the files I get a message saying that I don't have permission to access the files. I spent in and changed the settings in files to reflect property, yet I always refused. I have read the discussions and met some people with the same questions, but proposed solutions seem to be more confusing than the problem itself.

These files have been encrypted? If Yes and you did not save your encryption certificate/key, the files are lost forever. If the files are not encrypted (and you can do this natively in XP Home), then appropriate should do the trick. Again, here are the instructions:

    1. right click on the file or folder and then click Properties.
    2. click on the Security tab.
    3. under group or user names, click your name to see the permissions you have.

To open a file, you must have the read permission. For more information about permissions, see what are permissions?

To take ownership of a folder:

1 right click on the folder you want to take control and then click Properties.
    2. click on the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click the owner tab.
    3. click on modify. Need administrator permission if you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    4. click on the name of the person you want to give to the property.
    5. If you want this person to be the owner of the files and subfolders in this folder, select the Replace owner of subcontainers and objects to check.
    6. click on OK

If after all this you may not always get the files, I just boot the system with a Linux Live CD or Live USB key and copy in Windows there because Linux does not respect ownership/permissions of Windows.

I use LR 6.5 on an iMAC. Files RAF Fuji originally, I imported from an SD card worked and exported in the form of PSD and then after saving the files on an external hard drive RAF erased from Lightroom. I now have to import some RAF of the HD files but LR shows them as dazed out and said that they have already been imported when I hover over the thumbnail. I have this problem when importing files in the same HD Canon CR2, and who have been treated exactly the same. Anyone got a clue as to why this is happening? Thanks, Phil

    Hi Phil,

If Lightroom then reads these as duplicate files, it shows that they are already present in your Lightroom Catalog.

You can search by file name and check if the image is present in your library.

  • To access the other account via external hard drive

MacBook Pro (13 inch, early 2011)

    V.10.11.6 El Capitan (15G 31)

To summarize what I've lived, I got a kernel panic, by connecting to any account. So I tried to fix it by zapping the PRAM and NVRAM, tried the reset SMC, and both did not work. So I installed El Capitan on my external hard drive and it works, I just need to access the other account on the Mac to recover photos and then do a clean set install.

The problem is that I do not know how to access the other account on the mac like I did not move any info from another acc to my external hard drive. Is it possible to do more than to reconfigure my HD post and return to the new installation procedure? Or I'm able to get pictures on the other account with the photo software?

Open the drive containing, then the folder users, your record of departure, and photos. If you encounter a file that you don't have access permission, either drag it to the office supply your administrator password, or select the entire disk, choose get the information in the file menu and set to ignore permissions or ownership.

    Hello

    · Did you changes to the hard drive before moving the new files?

    · What files are missing from the external drive?

Connect the external hard drive on another computer and check if you are able to view and access these files.

  • Windows 7 can not "see" the files on my external hard drive all of a sudden after I used ICACLS to give me full control.

I used ICACLS in a command prompt high to give me all permissions for all on the external hard drive. I do not share the disk or remove permissions from any other 'user' but all of a sudden the guest not to see the files on the disc and I don't know what to do about it. But when I open a window and go outside, the files are there, I can access it, use them in all cases, I would normally.

Anyone has an idea why an elevated command prompt would not be able to see the files that are clearly on the external hard drive? There is just something not right on command prompt, you see only not the files that are there.

    Thanks in advance

Update: it turns out that there seems to be some kind of conflict between the UAC and the Administrators group. Don't know how I was touched, but I finally finished refusing authorization in writing system on my external hard drive. Suddenly Builtin Administrator, users of Builtin and NT Authority stood, one of them, or another group, resumed training, locked read-only access to all files, and then he took it a little further and removed my ability to write attributes or read them. I was forced to use a back up 'Admin I have on standby with a third I reapplied my main administrator permissions, but still denied access. After doing things with ICACLS, I was able to get a partial control, but I still couldn't save.

At the end of the road, it turns out that an external hard drive formatted in NTFS is recognized by the computer as a disk fixed, as if it were part of the computer, and there it was treated as such, given my file system files by locking the.

Even with the hidden Builtin Administrator I activated, I couldn't access the files. I finally had to move all the girls to the drive c:\ and format the external drive with exFat so that the system do not think that he was part of the computer. Unfortunately, I can never depend on having a System Image backup because exFat cannot have a writing for her.

I have full access, as well as anyone and everyone, there is no permissions on exFat, so it's a compromise, better than the system for the control of my own computer ruined combat...

  • Move the files to an external hard drive - LR3.2, Mac Snow Leopard

I apologize for this right now, but after reading other threads in this forum, buy a book, and I watch a video, I am more confused than ever! I want to spend 6 months of folders, subfolders, metadata, and keywords, off my portable hard drive to an external hard drive to free up room on my laptop (not). Then, I want to be able to access with the LR catalog on the external hard drive. The catalog that I use currently (showing all my photos 2010) also contains more recent files that I don't want to export because they are still topical. My studies, there are all kinds of suggestions on the creation of new files by drag-and - drop, using the sign, export catalogues etc, but nothing that tells me step by step how to achieve what I want to do! Pourrait - a nice person please guide me through this?

    Thnaks,

    Richard

To make LR 'see' your external hard drive, you must make a top folder of in LR.

In the library Module, click the icon "+" in the folders Panel, and then click "add a folder".

Navigate to your external hard drive and create the folder, call it what you want it to be.

Right-click on the new folder and click on "add a folder"; the player must then become visible.

Then, just drag and drop your images into this folder.

  • I can't save the file to my external hard drive connected to my wireless router!

I have a wireless router netgear WNDR3700 with 'plug-and-play' feature that allows a home to simply connect your hard drive to your network. I managed it to get up and running, but I encountered some problems when I tried to save files on the disk. The strange thing is that I can copy and paste or move the files to the location that I want to but I can't save it there... I have windows 7 Professional 64-bit installed.

    I thought about it :)

In the folder "My Computer" and under "Network location" I clicked on my external hard drive. Just below the navigation bar, I clicked on 'Map network drive' I entered all the information of location on hard disk and I got another file under "network location". I deleted the old one and used a new one that I could use without any problems until now... hope this makes sense...

  • CS4 won't open the files to an external hard drive. "not supported format or corrupted file?

    Hello

I'm having a certain hard using first but the passage between different computers.

So I created a project on another computer, in which I put the video files that are located on my hard drive (external). I saved the project on the same hard disk. Realization of my project, I noticed that creates the first "preview files" in a separate card.

I got a new computer in which I put the 2 GB of ram necessary for myself so I could work at home. BUT when I connected my HD on my computer and tried to open the project, the computer said one of the preview files were missing. No big surprise, so I'm going and find the file. Click on it, but then it says:

"not supported format or corrupted file", which is absolutely B * llshit because the Prime Minister created the file itself?

In addition, all media, I imported in the left part of the screen of the user (not sure what you call) IS 'off CONNECTION '. It gets weird, because when I try to find the media using FIND in first, not all the files SHOW UP?

Im getting quite nervous, because I need it to work hard enough

Maybe its helpful to mention that my new computer is a complete novice blown [no internet connection, does not sound again: I just installed Service Pack 2] and maybe I'm missing some drivers?

Please, please help me I'm wasting enough it actually...

    Thank you

    Jef

    Jef,

Open the CS4. Create a new project and when you get the sequence settings screen, are selectable AVCHD, HDV, and XDCAM presets?

If this isn't the case, you are using the trial version, or your full version has been restored to the status of the trial. The trial does not support anything MPEG, even when encapsulated in AVI format.

If you have the full version which is returned to the status of first instance, follow these steps:

    1. disable

    2 uninstall

    3. run the Script own CS4

    4 reboot

    5. Repeat steps 3 and 4

    6. Repeat steps 3 and 4

    7 install

    8 activate

    9. turn to update to 4.2.1

  • I can't move files on my external hard drive as it says I don't have permission.

Whenever I have try and drag or copy and paste the files on my external hard drive it says I don't have permission. I know this isn't the hard drive because it works on other computers

To give the control is a two-step process. Take ownership and then to give permissions.

Owner of a file allows the owner to change permissions even if they do not have the authorization to do so. It's the only thing that made property. The person who creates an object owns the object. For admins, the objects that are created are the property of administrators, not the individual.

You need start exploring as administrator to Start - All Programs - Accessories - made Windows Explorer right click and choose run as administrator.

You must therefore make a right-click folders / drive, you are interested in tick - button Properties - Security - Advanced button - property - Edit - Replace owner on Sub containers and objects tab - select one user-then Ok your way of out.

Right-click new - folder Properties - Security - Advanced - tab permissions - Edit button - select the account - check the two checkboxes - button - Advanced - Search now button Add button - select your tick - Ok button - total control in the list. OK your way out.

  • Trying to access the files on an external drive. It is denied. Some files are accessable. / problem solved. But please help me learn.

    Hello.

I use XP Home 32-bit Edition. My a-external hard drive is a Western Digital My Book Essential 1.5 Tb USB2 HARD drive: model number: WDBAAF0015HBK-00.

I can't access all files on the external hard drive. Currently, I mounted it on a folder. I have some files tif on the external hard drive and wanted to access my photos.

The message that I had to right click and select open with was "access to C:\(Folder tree) denied." I tried my programs and the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer of image editing. Nothing works.

When I right click on the images of problem the only options I have are: open, print, edit, Preview, open with, send to. None of these work.

Some files are not accessible, and others. Unaccessable files do not have a preview image in the window pane (on the lower left side when I'm in the folder).

This can happen if I didn't 'delete safetly' external hard drive or there was a Brown out? Some of the tif are too long file extensions? Shouldn't windows warn me too long file extensions?

I consulted the havn't the reader for a while.

I can not drag and drop the files to my desktop. I can't copy, cut, delete or move the files. When I click on a file, and then click file - properties: nothing shows up and he says: size: 0 bytes, size on disk: 0 bytes. But when I click on the file in the folder, it says that it is 23.3 MB. I can move the folder on my desktop.

When I select all the files and click on file - properties: it is said attributes: read-only and hidden. They are green in box, I have not did those and it does not work. I clicked on Advanced Options, again I had unstapled the ReadOnly and hidden, then I unchecked all 4 options because they were greenboxed too. It's green boxes, not the check marks in both situations. What are the green boxes?

    ______________________________________________________

Fixed a problem. I dragged and deposited the files on my desktop and I can access it. At this point, I just thought, since I had problems with the music files (mp3 or wav) is too long and is not be able to access or remove them, but I can delete the folders to get rid of them.

So my question is why am I unable to access the files? This is a limitation of my external hard drive? Can I test or repair? What is this kind of disk with this version of Windows? What is a format? It's NTFS. Computer management indicates that the external drive is healthy.

It seems that some files are not named as long as others and I could access those. Is there a limit on character/attribution of Tif or all types of files? If so, is it the same? Pourrait - linked to the way in which the external (or internal drive?) is setup in the policies tab? Are each disk different? They seem to be a little more limited than the internal hard drives, but I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the usb2.

This side, the general approach to access in this case is "Ownership" of these files.
"How appropriate a file or a folder in Windows XP"

This probably occurred because the files were created on different computers by users with different Secure ID (SID) or you have reinstalled Windows and files were protected to some extent.  Since you are using XP Home Edition, the only way to see the security settings is to start your computer using safe mode and log in as an administrator.  This will give you access to the 'Security' tab when you right-click on a file and select 'Properties' (as described in the article above).  Apart from connecting with Safe Mode, you can use 'Cacls' command from a command prompt window (start-> Run-> "cmd") to view or change permissions on files

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Community.

From your problem description, I understand that you are unable to transfer files from an external drive on another drive. Please let me know if this isn't the problem that you are experiencing.

Before troubleshooting, I have little information on the issue.

    1. Do you receive any error or display message?
    2. Did you recent hardware or modifications to the software on the computer before this problem?

Try the methods and then check after each method:

Method 1: Transfer files from a drive to the location on the desktop or a temporary folder and then try to transfer them to the destination disk.

Note: make sure the free space on the disk in the destination drive.

    Method 2: Run the Fixit:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/windows_file_and_folder_diag/

Method 3: Disconnect your player safely, and restart the computer. And then try to transfer the files.

If the problem persists, post your reply with results and questions above. We are happy to help you further in the advanced troubleshooting steps!
