I moved my hard drive to another computer and once connected to windows told me that I need to activate windows?

Once logged into windows, it tells me that I need to activate windows. I click Yes to activate and it tells me that windows is already activated, click OK and it returns me to my log in page over and over. Why? and what to do about it?

Because you are allowed to install and activate Windows on ONE computer and product activation has now determined that you try to use the installation on another computer.  If it is a retail version of Windows XP and if you move the installation to new hardware call Microsoft and explain the problem.  If it is an OEM version, like a Dell or HP installation and if you move it to another computer that you are to the top of the Creek with this, you are not allowed to move an installation OEM on another computer, it is linked to the computer on which it was sold with and he will die with this computer.

I removed my xp hard drive to another computer and now it says that I have to 'activate' and when I try, I get a weird response and they all but hang up on me.  I used this drive for many years, even the screen shows a picture of my table with flowers in a vase.  What is going on?  How can I get this problem?

Your hard drive, installed on a computer with Windows XP was preinstalled by the computer manufacturer? If this is the case, then you have a "OEM version" of Windows which is linked to the computer first it is installed on and cannot be moved or reinstalled on another computer.

If however you have a "Commercial" of XP version that you bought in a store, then you should be able to activate by phone, be aware that move the drive from one computer to another is more often go to work and XP may have problems (device drivers and other issues). The best solution is a clean installation (after you back up your data files).

my laptop is dying, I can move my hard drive to another computer and still use vista coa?

    Hello

It depends on the type of license you have, as to whether you can transfer it or not.

Pre-installed Licenses OEM (HP, Acer, etc.) and the Microsoft System Builder OEM licenses are tied to the first machine that they are installed on and channels of license when this machine dies.

    OEM licenses are not transferable.

If you have purchased your own license for sale retail of Windows and installed yourself, yes you can transfer it to another computer.

    Retail licenses are transferable.

Just be sure that you have only installed on one machine at a time.

A single license means one Installation.

And if it is retail and transfer you, in all likelihood will have to reinstall the operating system, as this disc hard the 'old' aura card mother drivers installed, which will cause starting problems.

  • Using a HARD drive in another computer?

The computer (where the hard drive comes from), is currently in a State of operation not.

I want to do is start this drive on another computer to look through of essential programs, so I can mark down.

I think it is when, for example, you connect a drive of Windows 8/8.1 in a new machine - it installs new hardware and starts right up. I don't want Vista to BSOD on me.

Anyone know if this is possible?

    Hello

In addition to the license issues, in all likelihood not we can start this drive in another computer, due to the fact that this damaged computer hard drive has all the drivers, etc is installed for the old motherboard failed.

That's all what you can do:

    Saving your files:

You can remove the hard drive and put it in a hard drive USB enclosure > plug it into another computer > and try to read and copy your data in this way.

Or you can install it as a slave inside another computer drive to read data.

    See you soon.

what needs to be done to ensure that I get my files on the disk

    Hello

You 'slave' it in another computer as a secondary drive. you do not try and run it in another computer as a Bootable drive.

The best and easiest way is to use a "USB hard disk box" > put the hard failure that > plug into the computer to work > try and read from there.

If it is too damaged to read, you may need to contact the data recovery specialists; but they are very expensive.

    See you soon.

    Hello

The operating system on the hard drive Acer you've changed a HP machine is a preinstalled OEM Windows license and an OEM license is related to the first machine that it has been installed in this case, your «broken» Acer machine

This license OEM "dies" when the original of the machine it has been installed on the "dies." in this case your Acer.

You have canceled the license of Windows that has been in the Acer as an OEM license is not transferable.

Retail sales only Windows licenses are transferable.

I put a new hard drive in my laptop and when I install Vista I get this message: "windows cannot configure windows to run on this hardware of computers."  I can't install an oem on a new hard drive version?  This is the portable original in all other respects.

    Hello

strange that you can request that

HP computers have been known to not let you install Vista on a non HP bought replacement hard drive

There were a few posters with this problem here

If the OEM disc for this particular laptop, you should be able to reinstall it as many times as you want as long as you have not changed the main material (the motherboard)

You can change the hard drives, RAM, etc.

I presume that you boot from the Vista DVD

  • Windows XP start error after access to the hard drive from another computer

Computer laptop Windows XP went bad because of a bad graphics card.  Bought a new computer at the same time with Windows 7.  Pull the hard drive of the laptop to get the files back.  Had to change the permissions to grant access.  Now when I try to start the windows XP laptop, I get a "windows cannot load the user's profile but you has logged on with the default profile" and then a "windows Explorer has encountered a problem" appears and I can't do anything with it.  When I select 'close' the screen goes gray, then the same message appears.  I have to use the Task Manager to restart.  I did a repair of my XP install disc and also a system restore and still the same problem.  Help!

Also, running service pack 3 before the repair.  Now on service pack 2 that I cannot access windows update to get updates.
