Ranging from USB to serial is mostly a question of adapting the wiring an Extender made for you.   I see that you have problems when you try to import MiniDV video from your camera to your MacBook Air. I see that you try to use a USB FireWire-cable to achieve this. I would suggest that you use a FireWire adapter rather Thunderbolt as a USB connection does not allow you to import the tape media in your computer.
