  Yes, this may be caused by the fact, there is not enough power provided by the USB port. first of all, note that external USB hard drives 3.5 inches are generally designed to be used with systems of office due to their higher power needs (this is also the reason that many need an external power supply of their own). my suggestion would be to buy a 2.5 inch drive external hard USB is designed to be used with laptops.   After saving everything, can I really keep this large amount of things on my HARD drive. I can move it on my external hard drive?

  If I remove this 6 GB, I'll have a more reasonable 75 GB to play with.

  The other option would have been to start on an OEM XP disk, opt for delete and re-create a primary partition and load Vista from there after the format. Would it be: r: work and B: use less space.

  If the 6 GB file is all that it would save, I'll just save it on my external HARD drive.

  The Windows.old folder is a backup of your files/folders/settings of your XP system etc.

  It is automatically created during the process of update for Vista and is designed as a quick way to return to the earlier version of the operating system if you need to do. \obviously its value will decrease over time, once you start using Vista, because different files will become obsolete with the use.

  The normal procedure is to remove these backup files "shadow", once you are happy that Vista is not working properly and there is an option to do it for you in the utiliy Vista disk cleanup.

What I've read, it seems that ExFat is the best option for this (they are large files, so that the FAT will not work). My work, however, requires external hard drives to encrypt.   If you were able to encrypt it using the built-in OS x software, Windows would not be able to decipher. If you use a Windows build-in encryption software, OS X would not be able to decipher.

  You have to find a 3rd party package that works on BOTH OS X and Windows, which can encrypt and decrypt on both platforms.

  In the past, I would have done TruCrypt, however, he was abandoned by unknown original authors, but there have been a few replacements based on the original source of TruCrypt.  Try googling 'TruCrypt Alternatives' and you might find something where they support the OS X and Windows.

  Otherwise, you will need to find another cross platform encryption package.

  Uhm... I think the issue here is a misunderstanding of what you watch.

  If you want to access your files from the old hard drive - you need to look in the right place.  If the old system was "Windows 7", "Documents and Settings" is the * wrong * place to look and "Users" would be the place to go.

  You * will * take ownership and change permissions on ALL (you want to propagate to all subfolders/files when do - to save time) in order to get them properly.

  New-->: Windows Vista/7 would have your files located in the directory 'Users' of the root of the drive - and then under your username.

  • \USERS\\Desktop\
  • \USERS\\Downloads\
  • \USERS\\Favorites\
  • \USERS\\Documents\
  • \USERS\\Music\
  • \USERS\\Pictures\
  • \USERS\\Videos\

  ... etc...

  Documents and settings to WIndows Vista/Windows 7 is a symbolic link and would lead to what you see if you tried to use it.

And if you have files bigger than 4 GB it will be problems with these as FAT32 does not support that. exFAT supports, but I didn't know of any tool that can convert NTFS to exFAT without wiping the drive.

  Looks like a HARD drive contains a preinstalled software that is not compatible with Win 7.
  I'm not sure if this will help but try this:

  Connect your HDD to the other no Win 7 PC
  Select the CD drive with your browser (password)
  Run the ONSPCLCK.exe (or another exe file which controls and password.)
  Select 'Options '.
  Select "Disable security password"
  Enter your current password
  Unplug the HARD drive
  Connect the HARD drive to laptop with Win 7 OS.
