I deleted these emails, some time ago. The basket is empty. I would like to remove them permanently, but have not been able to locate them in a form that will allow me to do. FIXED by the questioner. I found a file called 'global-messages-db-sqlite' in the folder ' (user) > AppData > Roaming > Thunderbird > profiles > jt * .default.

on my external hard drive, I have more than 200 GB of free space.Do NOT remove the data personal when you uninstall your current version of Firefox, because all profile files will be deleted and you lose personal data such as bookmarks and passwords from other versions of Firefox profiles.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and will not be affected by a uninstall and (re) install, but make sure that 'delete personal data' is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
Note that there is a version of Firefox 24.1.1 ESR if you want to stay on the ESR update channel.
