  I had to think about upgrading a Macbook Air to a Macbook Pro and have done research on how pretty much everything (files, account icloud, etc.) to move to a new computer so I know how to do it when the time comes. I didn't save my current computer at the time I got it and didn't know whether it was necessary to do it before the transfer. Also, I found two different ways to move information from one mac to another, one way being using the migration wizard, the other via the time machine. The problem is that I've never used time machine (I checked my settings and it is turned off). I was curious to know which option would be the 'best' way and if not never back up my computer would be a problem. (If its possible, could someone also please explain how to back up my computer?)

  I use Time Machine often (and have used since its introduction).  I also upgraded my Mac hardware quite often (about every 18 months).  Whenever I move to a new machine, I use the Migration Wizard (and not Time Machine).  I've never had a problem.

  Then I suggest that you need not Time machine specifically in order to change computers.  However, you really need to keep backups simply because the material is not, and without a backup, you are subject to lose everything you have on your computer.

  First, please ensure that caps lock is not on. Note that on some models of laptops, the LED of the caps lock key may not work when you start up if FileVault is turned on.   Hi, I tried to use the Migration Wizard to transfer my settings my iMac to a MacBook Pro new etc.  The transfer failed, and now my iMac froze with transferring your screen information, suggesting it will update your system settings.  On that note, it has been frozen for several hours.  I tried to force quit but it sounds right.  I also tried turning it off, but when I turn on the power, even once, it returns the same screen.

  By 'frozen' do you mean that you cannot move the cursor?

  If two Macs are connected wireless, it can take several hours, even days, finish the Migration Wizard. If you can't wait that long, you can force the Mac does not close in holding the power button down for several seconds. My problem is that I have a time machine backup that is greater than 256 GB (it's almost 450 GB) and I try to find out if I can use migration assistant to transfer all the content directly on an external hard drive, then move the content I want on my hard drive from the external hard drive? My goal is to let my music and photos on the external hard drive and for all port hardware I need for work.

  I don't have access to another mac with storage well enough that I have the old HD so could potentially be installed in an external enclosure and extracted files directly from there if it's easier.

  What I intend to do in the long term is to buy a big external hard drive network and put all my photos, music etc over there and use the laptop as expected - that is for files from day to day - then it will be just a short-term problem.

  Any advice would be really appreciated.

  Migration Assistant is user to transfer data from one computer to the other.  If I read your post correctly, you want to copy your data from Time Machine on another HARD disk.  Thia may be useful:

  Migration wizard does not work in the case of Adobe applications.

  Please, try the following steps:

  • Uninstall Adobe CC (Creative Cloud help |) Uninstall the creative Office Cloud app)
