  You don't say how Vista has been reinstalled.

  Looking for a windows.old folder and if you find one, see if you can save your data from it.

  I have a usb external drive that I use for back ups etc, it worked fine on my laptop to start, but now it is recognized by windows but I can't access it, it just continues to display the message "you can safely remove the hardware" and the icon.
