I've forgotten the master password for security

I forgot my master password when I want to record the passwords for the various Web sites.   The following master password for security device window appears, and the password required to save a specific website password, that's what I forgot.   I know I can reset the master password, but do not know how to create a new one once you've forgotten.  This is the window that I don't speak...

Hello, the connection information is stored in cookies, which are not guaranteed by the password (it protects only have access to the file that stores the passwords). If you are concerned about security, you can set firefox to keep the cookies only for the current session.

Enable and disable the cookies that Web sites use to track your preferences

You don't have to log in to Firefox. Firefox is just a browser, such as Internet Explorer. Everything you have to do is double-click it and open it. It's like Internet Explorer. If you have some sort of password extension protecting your Firefox, it's different and you need to contact the developer of the extension.

  • Master password for the software security device

I have Windows Vista and you are using the Firefox browser.

I put the master password for the peripheral Secutiry Kaspersky software on the tools, tab options and have now forgotten the password.  I tried every possible password, and that you do not.

I tried to restore the system using several different control points in the hope that it would work, but the system restore will not work.  Is there something I can do?

  • I've never set up a master password for firefox. Somehow the browser locked mode, now and request a master password. How can I get it to unlock?

There is no URL line, that anything can be taken.

Also, I have reinstalled the program as well. No change. Always default to a request for a password THAT I HAVE EVER CREATED.

Full disclosure: I reached to reconnect cable and pressed my chest against my keyboard while the computer was in mode 'sleep', with Firefox running in background. When I was in, the browser has been locked. I tried all the passwords I know and use. No luck. Following addy won't charge, even if the entry on the home page.

    chrome://pippki/content/ResetPassword.XUL

Yet once, no url line does open, I run the browser, more. I just get the following message:

Please enter the master password for the software security device.

    Help! Thank you!

Create a new profile as a test to see if your profile is the source of the problems.

See "basic troubleshooting: a new profile:

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "tools > Modules > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If this new profile works then you can transfer files from the old profile to the new profile, but make sure not to copy corrupted files.

  • After you type the master password in session can force type master password once again without ending the current session and start new session?

Sometimes after using the password to access an account during a given session of firefox, I want to "repeal" this ability of automatic access (i.e. require type the password again once) without having to put an end to the current session and restart firefox.

It's nice to only have to type the password once per session, there are times when after launching an action that I would let the browser unattended for a short period but to prevent others to access sensitive information on other sites if they can't my master password. Note that this is not the same thing as "locking the browser. Currently, the only way I know to force it is to kill the session and restart the browser but it's not very satisfying if I really want to stay connected (allowed) to a particular site. I hope that adding a button in the Security tab "requires the master password for the current session" would be a simple solution to implement? Thank you for your attention.

You can connect from the software security device (e.g. click Cancel in the dialog box display the passwords) to force them to return to the MP once more.

  • How can I add a site to use the master password I clicked previously never "for this site?

When first asked me if I wanted to use the master password to a site (specifically www.facebook.com) I clicked on "never" do not forget the password for this site. How can I use the master password to this site (or any site) now?
    Thank you

    1. Click on the Firefox button, go to Options | Options | Security.
    2. Click the 'Exceptions' button and remove Facebook from the list.

The next time you go to Facebook and type your password, you should get the option to add to the list of passwords.

Thanks for the help jscher, but it turns out that I was using private browsing, and passwords are stored naturally not so "remember password is disabled." This makes sense to me now.

  • The new synchronization process and the master password do not mix

Article why I can't sync my passwords? linkified ~ J99 says that the password inhibits synchronization, which explains why the "password sync" option is grayed out, if the password is used. Then to syncv passwords that must disable the master password, i.e. by train to "empty".

    What speaks against the following:

    1. disable the password and let synchronization collect existing passwords
    2. activate the password
    3. do this on all the devices of interest

Finally, all devices should have 'more or less' synchronized passwords, while benefiting from the security provided by their main password. "Roughly", because the above procedure consecutively for devices A, B, C ends with B having a synchronized set passwords of A and B and C the game, containing people with disabilities of A synchronization, B and C (which is all of the passwords in the cloud). Given the fact we do not change passwords too often, so this shouldn't be a big problem. We can, for instance recovery procedure above for A at the end of the round.

    Does make sense?

"The problem of this bug is on the fact that we are no longer synchronized passwords if you have master-password enabled. We realize this is a significant limitation and we are working on a solution to bring things back to parity with the synchronization of the former. We do not take this issue seriously, and certainly, the challenge will be to store the credentials FxA in connection manager, so protected by the master-password as are other passwords. »

  • Disable the master password popup

Hi, this has always been a problem with FF. I share my PC. My partner has a master password. I don't. However whenever I use Firefox asks me the master password, and this repeats (times) everytime I open a tab for a site on which a defined password there. I have my own accounts and know my passwords. I don't want a master password and do not want to access its accounts. How can I cancel the application of the MP and just use firefox withouth the face with that annoying Member pop - up every few minutes! Its driving me crazy. Please save me. Thank you

    This has happened

    Each time Firefox opened

    == to always

The only way to avoid the pop-up master password if you use two (all) the same profile is to disable the password manager.
Tools > Options > Security: passwords: "remember passwords for sites".
    ---
You must create a separate profile for each of you.

    See:
    http://KB.mozillazine.org/Creating_a_new_Firefox_profile_on_Windows
    http://KB.mozillazine.org/Shortcut_to_a_specific_profile ('Shortcut on the desktop')
    ---
If you need to have several open profiles at the same time then start the following instances with the - no - remote line switch.
You can send links from other programs to an instance of Firefox is launched with a - no.-remote, you must drag the links in a Firefox window in such cases.

    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Opening_a_new_instance_of_Firefox_with_another_profile

  • Thunderbird 38.0.1 requires the master password to be entered twice after activation of Gmail OAuth

I have a Gmail (IMAP) and an iCloud (IMAP) TB account protected by a master password. Since the upgrade to to 38.0.1 and the configuration of the acct of Gmail for OAuth I find that when I run the application of TB he invites me for the password twice before that I can move forward. I tried to remove the iCloud acct and then he needed only the password entered once, but as soon as I have readded the iCloud acct invites more twice once for the password. It seems that you must now enter once for each account e-mail instead of after the period. It seems to be triggered by changing the Gmail to OAuth as previously he worked as documented (a single master password entry) with two e-mail accounts.

In fact, when launching first TB appears very briefly the form of drop down menu of master password and then immediately disappears (before), because then he slide down again to allow the first entry in the master password.

Good news - updated my Mac to 38.1 TB newly released solved the problem of the Thunderbird menu corrupted when you use StartupMaster 1.6.1.

Now I can use StartupMaster successfully to bypass the password multiple guest problem (bug #177175) at the launch of Thunderbird.

  • Introduce the main password for already synchronized computers?

I have 3 computers (1 Mac, Ubuntu 2) synchronized via Firefox Sync. Currently my passwords are not protected.

Now, I would like to introduce a master password on all my computers.
But somehow, if I set up password on one computer, my passwords are still not protected on the other computers.
Even when I completely remove all data and re-sync, I can access my passwords without the master password on the other computers.

How do I proceed in order to obtain passwords on all computers that are protected by a master password while always being synchronized and at the same time ensure that there are no remains of passwords protected on any computer or server firefox?

Furthermore, if I stop the synchronization of passwords on all devices, be they deleted from the synchronization server?

Hi xaggi, must differentiate here - a master password is to protect passwords locally on a device.
strong encryption is already built-in sync, if you need any additional measures to protect passwords on synchronization servers except that choosing a password for strong account first (technical details at https://github.com/mozilla/fxa-auth-server/wiki/onepw-protocol - your data gets encrypted locally before being transmitted to the servers in synchronization, with no way to access these data to third parties such as mozilla without knowing your credentials).

If you want to use master passwords on other devices as well, you can do it, but configure them manually - this isn't a parameter that is transferred through synchronization...

  • I used a master password for years. Today, I noticed that it had been authorized. What could cause this?

I used a master password for years. I also use Sync. Today, I wanted to watch one of my saved passwords. When I went to do this, I noticed that Firefox was no longer is configured to use a master password. I'm afraid I can have been hacked, or that something is is past (recent update Firefox?) which caused the use of the master password will be disabled.

I have not yet checked my other computers synced to see if their master password has been disabled.

I have re-enabled the functionality of password on this computer.

On this particular computer, I had a long-standing issue date where Firefox ' help > about Firefox "still says I need to"restart to update. This means that I can't use "help > about Firefox ' to check and install the latest version. I need to download Firefox manually and update by running the installation program.

If the files have already been downloaded, then delete the files in the folder updates\0 and updates.

You can also remove active - update.xml, or even updates.xml (this will clear the update history).

    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)
