  It certainly isn't by design... In the case where one of your extensions is concerned, could test the search mode without failure of Firefox feature?   You can restart Firefox in Mode safe mode using either:

  • button "3-bar" menu > "?" button > restart with disabled modules
  • Help menu > restart with disabled modules

  Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still works

  I wouldn't try a reinstall immediately. An ordinary reinstall often not made the changes that it would bring.

  user.js file will be a small file in your profile and contained text. If copy you and rename user . txt or user.js.txt it will be readable by any word processor, even if Notepad can open it is.

  If they open when you launch Firefox as part of the restoration of session, so you can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the profile folder of Firefox that store session data.
