  You should be able to print with just the black cartridge installed.

  Unfortunately, the printer does not print until the replacement of the yellow ink. There is no work around for low ink message.

  The reason that this, your printer is actually not to damage the internal parts.  Mainly the printhead.  It is built in integrated security to help protect your investment.  HP, as other printer manufacturers, offers you with permanent print heads printers requiring ink for all colors, avoid the print heads. HP, like some other manufacturers, also offers printers with user replaceable print heads. These may or may not require ink in all colors in print, even though damage may occur if the print from the cartridge empty.   This printer takes individual ink cartridges (IIC), and this ink delivery system requires that all cartridges to be installed for the printer to work. You can set the printer to "Using black ink only", but that must be done before a cartridge is exhausted, that the printer inks for other uses in fairest impression. It also uses the ink for the maintenance of the print heads. Here a link to a document that turns to explain various ways that ink is used in a printer beyond just printing.

  Nevermind, I figured it. If you set the printer on the mode of manufacture, it ignores the ink levels. Sorted.

  I understand that you would like to know if you can continue printing in black ink, if one of the color toner is empty. I'll be happy to help you.

  This printer was designed to function as a system of four cartridges, so you must have all four available ink cartridges in order to be able to print.

  I was able to recreate what you see.   I managed to work around it by installing a different driver that is also supposed to be compatible with the CLJ3600.

  Please consider trying this as a possible solution:

  (1) uninstall the driver CLJ3600 by opening printers and fax machines, driver selection and right-click on it and select Delete.  Once it is removed, right-click on an empty space in the windows printers and faxes and select Server properties.  Click the driver tab, click the CLJ3600 and then click on remove.

  One when you're done, restart, and then install the CLJ3500 driver.  This is a previous version of the driver that has been implemented for the CLJ3600 and is compatible with the CLJ3600.

  After installation, try printing again.

  The output I have indicates it will print is more negative.  Please let me know if you have success.

  One caveat about this solution.  The Color LaserJet 3500 doesn't support duplex.  Of workaround only works for two printing on the package of basic or the Color LaserJet 3600 N.

  Here's what you need to do to change the settings for printing for Google Cloud Print:

  1. Go to https://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/ and click on "Try it now" (you may be prompted to sign in if so, sign, then click the link again.)
  2. A pop-up will appear with your list of printers.
  3. Select a printer.
  4. Click on options.  Grey_K will be black ink only, Grey_CMY will be high quality gray and color will be full color.

  The printer Officejet Pro 8100 has the same print mechanism like its counterpart of all-in-One Officejet Pro 8600.  This printer has a print head mechanism that contains 4 individual cartridges: CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black).

  It will replace the cartridge if the unit provides a message from one of the colors being empty, until the unit will resume printing.  This is a retention mechanism to avoid the product from damage.  I hope this helps.

  Follow the steps below to print using black ink only:

  1. from the application used to print, click the file menu and select print.
  The print window is displayed.
  NOTE: The print window might be minimized: click the blue triangle next to product model (Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.6) or the button view details (Mac OS X v10.7 or 10.8) to display all of the available settings.

  2. to access the color options, click in the area of selection below, listed as the name of the program (e.g. TextEdit)
  Will appear as Copies & Pages within Microsoft Office applications.

  3. Select Type/quality paper in the menu dropdown.

  4. click the triangle next to color Options of spending parameters.

  5. set the color to grayscale field.

  6. set the Mode to grayscale in black cartridge only.

  You can save the settings for later use by clicking preset > save current settings as preset.
