  I then expanded this section and under view changed to display hidden items.
  Several hundred elements appears (for most 6to4 adapters) and I deleted all the.

  And... everything works again! YAY!

The first thing to try is to turn off the graphics acceleration (go to Preferences/Performance tab and then uncheck the box here). IF this does not help, then you can consider doing your brush in Photoshop Elements or Photoshop, instead of brushing in Lightroom.
