Icons on the desktop and start used menu opened directly unless I use 'open with' program HELP PLEASE!

Hello I have a huge problem and need HELP! With all the shortcuts I have on my desktop and icons that I have in my menu it start seem to be a problem. It allows me to open any programs unless I choose a program to start with. Now, I open ALL my programs with the "Open with" menu and its really a lot of time. Also I am not able to start all of the office programs, that it says I need set associations but I checked control panel and I couldn't find that. I tried the FIXIT Windows program on other issues ive had in the past and I was wondering if maybe theres a fix for the problem im having. IM currently on vista Home premium. and I really hope theres someone out there who can help me!   Thank you for your time...
