iMac Bootcamp slow disk? Upgrade SSD?

Hello

I have an iMac that I bought in January 2014.

The configuration is:

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1 GB GDDR5

3.1 GHz Quad - core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9 GHz

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2 x 4 GB

1 TB 5400 RPM Serial ATA hard drive

Now, I run Bootcamp on window 8, and I mainly use it for music production. I am facing problems in my music software and it tends to be slow.

In Task Manager, the disk performance is almost always 100%, even when I do certain related work of non-musique.

My question is: is my hard drive, the main problem here, in order to have optimal performance?

If Yes, would be updated to Samsung 500 GB 850 Evo 2.5 "SATA Solid State Drive III solve all my pain and suffering?

I really hope you can help me guys!

You cannot install an SSD in an iMac in 2014, however, you can use an external SSD to boot from. However, you have another problem... Windows does not work from an external device. In short, he must live with what you have or sell the computer and buy an iMac with a pre-installed SSD.

How to use an SSD with your HARD drive

If you want to use an SSD as boot with your existing HARD disk drive, as the disk 'data', here is what you can do.

After installing the SSD, you need to partition and format the SSD using disc utility disc. Then install OS X on the SSD. Once installed OSX boot from SSD. Startup disk preferences to set up the SSD as the boot volume.

Open the preferences users and groups. Click the lock and authenticate you. Or CTRL - RIGHT click on your username account list in the sidebar and select Advanced Options in the context menu. You will see a field called "Home dir: ' on the far right, you will see an Edit button. Click on it. In the file dialog box, navigate to the location in house now located on the HARD disk (disk HARD/users/user_name /.) Select the folder, click the Open button. Restart the computer, as shown. When the computer starts, it will now use the home located on the HARD drive folder.

Another more technical method involving the Terminal and the alias is discussed in depth here: using OS X with a SSD and HDD - Matt Gemmell configuration. It's my preferred approach because I can choose which records of the House, I want to on the HARD drive and I don't want to. For example, I like to keep Documents and library files on the SSD because I frequently access their content.

Make sure that you keep the bootable system entirely on your HARD drive where you need it.

I was think to upgrade my SSD (which is a 160 GB Intel 320 series running at 3/Gbs.  He me really befuddles as to why HP would use slower 3/GB SSD in their premium platforms.  In addition, I need more space.

But anyway the problem is the following:

My OS is on the disk, so a few other programs and games (Microsoft office [full version], BF3, etc.).  Since it's an OEM system, the way I understand well - is that the OS is an OEM version and is "linked" to the mobo - so I can't just change the SSD on and use my re system restore disk - install Win 7 on a new SSD.  It won't work.

My question is can I get a key of activation Windows from HP or Microsoft that will allow me to win $100 for the purchase of a new copy of Windows 7 (and I don't want to win 8).

This is the SSD, I am considering:

I intend now and wiping the Intel SSD 320 and use it as a third hard drive.

Or, if I can clone data the old on the new SSD SSD-"trick" the system that I have not changed anything.  I know that there are utility programs there cloning.  I hate having to buy a new copy of Windows 7 on top of everything else.

    Thank you.

    Hello

There should not be a problem with the help of the HP recovery discs to recharge the system on your new SSD.  However, you will need to reinstall your programs, and copy your data across.

    1. Unplug the current SSD and the new SSD of cables in this SATA port.
    2. Use the HP recovery discs and rebuild your system.
    3. Reinstall your programs.
    4. If all is good then rewired the old SSD and copy your data across.

You will have a for the Samsung 840 mm 7 SSD mounting bracket.

  • iMac mid-2010 for one SSD HARD drive replacement

    Hello

After reflection, (mainly in the meantime my principalement en attendant mon iMac iMac starts!), I decided to replace the HDD with a SSD. After having done some research and I watch YouTube videos, I'm not sure if I have bought the right tools for the job. Could someone please help me and let me know if I'm not on the right track here.

The iMac in question is a model 27 "2010.

Here's what I have on order:

I also ordered suction cups and relevant screwdrivers.

I intend to completely remove the current HD and its replacement by the new SSD. Am I right assuming that I will just remove current thermal sensor cable and replace it with the one OWC? I'm not 100% on this one.

    Cheers in advance

    Ian

Yes, you just remove the thermal sensor and place the OWC in line sensor (the sticker pad can be placed on the support of 2, 5-2, 5 (as the SSD will not have a lot of heat).  The longer a cable must be re-attached the logic board.

The only suggestion I have would be - it probably need not SATA cables for this-> upgrade SSD HARD drive, thermal line sensor is long enough - in fact, too long that I had to press them to be shaped in the iMac.  Unless you plan to add other SSD in the system, since the iMac 2010 with SATA 2 (3 GB/s speed).

    Good luck

  • GarageBand too slow disk or system overload

    Hey all,.

Awhile back I posted this same problem and never had an acceptable answer or solution.  No other threads on this topic have contributed to the other.  For about 6 months now, I get this error message in Garageband reading projects.  The activity monitor shows a lot of free RAM and while GB uses 30% of the CPU, I have nothing else running, and therefore to have 60% of CPU still free.  I do not use an excessive amount of plugins, or even the tracks.  I tried to minimize the software titles, but even that seems to have no effect.  In the most recent case, I have only a race.

To start with, here are my system specs:

    Mid-2012 15 "MacBook Pro

    OS 10.11.2 El Capitan

    GarageBand 10.1.0

500 GB hard drive (200 GB free)

    2.3 GHz i7 processor

    8 GB 1600 RAM MHzDDR3

I bought this computer with Snow Leopard and 4 GB of RAM and the latest version of Garageband.  I could play the tracks on the slopes and the use of plugins and never had this problem - never ONCE until the BONES and the GB have been upgraded.  Does anyone have new solutions for this?

I have the same problem. He arrived only after an automatic update of the GB. Apple monitors this forum, that this message had no response in 3 days? GarageBand is now effectively useless for me.

I have a macbook pro and have an audio backing track and track a guitar running, which stops after 10 seconds saying too slow disk etc. No other programs are running. The same file ran fine before the update of GB.

    Please help Apple!

  • Upgrade SSD for Dell XPS 15 9550

    Hello

I have Dell XPS 9550 with configuration 32 GB SSD + 500 GB HARD disk. I want to upgrade SSD for more space avaliablity.

But I don't know what type of SSD, I'll need to buy. Also, I read XPS 15 to repair. There are two chapter for the removal and replacement of the SSD in the maintenance manual. First chapter of half-length SSD, second chapter SSD full length.

What type of SSD is mounted in my laptop? Half or full length?

How can I identify necessary SSD for me in stores (dimensions, label, etc.)?

What interface for SSD do I need?  PCIE or SATA?

What is the map? M2.2280 or PCI-E AIC (-expansion card)?

    Thanks in advance!

These are all numbers of Dell and descriptions.

The system uses a PCIe (or is if you want a faster player), 2280 m2 or small size.  UNLESS you buy directly from Dell, it is best NOT to buy versions OEM of SSD (Samsung end pieces in a '1' vs '0' for details).

OEM spare parts are usually not compatible to end-users by the manufacturer.

Because you will probably install the operating system for the new SSD, don't forget to make a recovery media set, you need to load the operating system on the larger capacity disk - what you have now is just a cache for the main hard drive.

You say that you do not want to open the case.  Is it fair to clone the disk or you are not going to install it in the computer?

I have a HP 810-135qe Phoenix.  I installed a Samsung 840 EVO 500 GB SSD2.5 ".  It works absolutely great.  I cloned my HHD using the software of the Data Migration tool provided by Samsung.  In addition, the Software Wizard to adjust the performance of the SSD.  There is a section to download at the bottom of the page in the link I have provided.  It is one of the SSDS a few who has a good reputation for installation without changing the BIOS.

  • SATA using more slow disks for FRA and archivelogs

    1. I am looking for some advice on staging on a SAN storage for my oracle database. I currently have a San with all SAS 15 K drives and I'm looking to develop the San and add SATA 7.2 K disks store. I want to locate our FRA including our "disk to disk" backup oracle and our archive of these disks SATA 7.2 logs and I was wondering if any effect it would have on our production database?

    2. also, I also plan to place an instance of development entirely on the 7.2 K drives and I was wondering what to expect for performance in this regard?

    Thank you

Oracle cannot know the details ( t - it? ), but it can occupy.  If your slower disks cannot archive logs fast enough because, well, they are slower, and you have other things going on over there, in the worst case, it could stall your db.  I hope that you would have enough newspapers of recovery to avoid this, but if all goes by one controller, you can still have a problem.  And then, if your system is linked to the CPU, it can make no difference at all.  But if being cpu bound to the means available to it to wait for the processor to perform queries of e/s, it could.  Difficult to say without testing, huh?  in any case, with a San, number of batteries often makes more of a difference than the speed controller and the buffering, buffering, network problems, and so on all are potential bottlenecks or has.  And bottlenecks that make the difference.
