Impossible to turn on the Windows Firewall, get 0x8007042c error code
Do not let me turn on the firewall... code 0x8007042c error... How can I get rid of the error?
Not so much because of the error code, but because your system is probably infected with malicious rogue security software, while your genuine Norton Security program has been completely disabled and is therefore more actively protects you.
New malware secretly uninstall your Antivirus and then takes its place
Since your security protection comes through Norton, you should seek the help of Norton in his withdrawal. This infection can are delivered with a rootkit, and guiding the help of Norton or a malware removal Forum would be appropriate in these circumstances.

OP: Problem with Windows XP service pack 3__ firewall settings
When I try to view the settings of the firewall, a dialog box appears saying "Due to a problem not identified, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings".
I read a thread on a file to merge with the registry of XP SP2. I did not like I do not know if it would work with SP3? or should I do something else?
In addition, why is that happening? What is the problem with the Windows Firewall? If this has happened for some time is a Microsoft patch that can be downloaded instead of trying to make mergers of registry (I'm not very happy to do).
Thank you

When I try to turn on the Windows Firewall, I get a sign message that says "Due to a problem not identified, Windows cannot display the firewall settings."
I found another thread in Microsoft Answers relating to this problem, but who said to go into Services and see if the firewall is configured to automatically start. However, I can't find a Windows Firewall item in the Services Menu.
I have the PC Tools Spyware Doctor antivirus.
I had to do a complete recovery system... which sets just need to make sure that you back up your files.

An Antivirus is a fundamental need for security to prevent malware being installed.
Malware to disable your firewall and your safety programs.
Scan of Malware in Safe Mode with network.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-Windows-in-safe-mode/#Vista
Windows Vista
Using the F8 method:
- Restart your computer.
- When the computer starts, you will see your computer hardware are listed. When you see this information begins to tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the Boot Options Advanced Windows Vista.
- Select the Safe Mode with networking with the arrow keys.
- Then press enter on your keyboard to start mode without failure of Vista.
- To start Windows, you'll be a typical logon screen. Connect to your computer and Vista goes into safe mode.
- Do whatever tasks you need and when you are done, reboot to return to normal mode.
Once in Safe Mode with network, download and run RKill.
RKill does NOT remove the malware; It stops the Malware process that gives you a chance to remove it with your security programs.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/
Then, download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware in Mode safe mode with networking:
http://www.Malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

For an Antivirus, install one of these free AVs (installation more than it will cause problems).
And first of all remove any AVs expired may still have installed:
Microsoft Security Essentials:

Cannot receive or send mail using the Windows Mail get 0x800CCC18 error number
How can I fix the problem?
Cannot receive or send mail using the Windows Mail get 0x800CCC18 error number
Windows mail was working fine until about 2: 30 EST 2011-12-14 and tried to send an email and got the above error msg.Check with your mail service provider to make sure that there is not an intermittent interruption of service. If you have webmail capabilities, you can also check. Otherwise, compact and repair the database (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) and if that doesn't help, remove your e-mail account, close and reopen WinMail and then add it back back. Also check 3rd party program interference such as antivirus software (see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3).

@ Evanston only!...
You see the effects of a hijackware infection! If you had used the computer longer, I might recommend trying to detect & remove infections. But it would probably take a week or two and I'm sure you have better to do with your time right now so I would recommend the following (which shouldn't take any more than two hours of uninterrupted time).

Cleaning a compromised system
http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc700813.aspxPersonal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows. Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) will NOT fix it!
HOW to do a clean install of Win7: see "using the custom installation and formatting the hard drive option" (or "reinstall it Windows 7") http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7 article
NOTE: If your computer came with a set of disks, there is a hidden partition restore (not to be confused with the restoration of the system) you would use to do the clean install (AKA a "destructive recovery").
After the new installation, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of EVERYTHING on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) AND BEFORE to plug in a flash, SD card, or any other external drive to the computer otherwise:
4 steps to help protect your new computer before going online
http://www.Microsoft.com/security/pypc.aspxVERY IMPORTANT! -Online free trial Norton will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free AND download/run the removal tool again Norton before installing updates AND BEFORE installing your new application antivirus (for example, Avast5 or Microsoft Security Essentials, free).
Tip: Do not install Spybot again; It's really overkill in Win7 my humble OPINION, especially if you are installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, good reputation and stand-alone computer (that is, not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) repair facility.

You can run the fix it from the link below and check if this can help: diagnose and automatically fix problems of Windows Firewall service: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_firewall_diagnostic/en-us?entrypoint=lightbox
Also access the link: you cannot enable or disable the Windows Firewall on a Windows XP Service Pack 2 computer setting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914230
Note: A Firewall is software or hardware that checks information coming from the Internet or a network. Firewall blocks some information or allows information to pass to your computer. If the information is blocked or passed through depends on your firewall settings. A firewall can prevent malicious software (such as worms) to access your computer through a network or the Internet. A firewall can also help stop your computer from malware sent to other computers.
