However, no user name and password combo that works, even the one that I used to install an update a few months ago (there were a few posts about this, but no one seems to have problems after they have already installed updates I've seen.)

  Something else to help you achieve, you will not be able to use CS5.5 update the application you already in the App Store. Apple rules prohibit you to drop support for a device when you perform an update. You can use CS5.5 for the manufacture of new applications to submit, but you do have to use CS5 (or PFI from the command line) during updates of the existing application.
