Hi 1pinktink,

Welcome to Microsoft answers forums!

a. What is the exact error message that you receive?

b. don't you make changes to the computer before this problem?

c. what anti-virus program you installed on the computer?

This problem may occur if there is a conflict between windows defender and the security software installed on the computer.

I suggest you try the following steps:

Step 1: Disable security software, follow the steps mentioned below

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/disable-antivirus-software

Note: Activate security software back once the test is completed.

Step 2: The System File Checker (SFC) utility allows administrators to perform an analysis of all protected resources to make sure they are the correct version. Whether SFC should find all incorrect versions in one of these protected resources, SFC will be replaced by the correct versions.

You can still run a SFC scan on the windows vista computer. To run a scan suite SFC as follows:

a. Click Start, in the start search bar type cmd, right-click on the command prompt icon in the box programs and then click Run as administrator.

b. at the command prompt type sfc/scannow , and then press ENTER.

Step 3: Install the latest updates for windows defender

To check updates in Windows Defender, follow these steps:

1. start Windows Defender if it is not already open. To do this, click Start, click programs, and then click Windows Defender.

2 search for new definitions. To do this, click search for updates now

Vista and Windows 7 updated drivers love then here's how update the most important.

This is my generic how updates of appropriate driver:

This utility, it is easy see which versions are loaded:

-Free - DriverView utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.
For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,
Description, version, product name, company that created the driver and more.
    http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/DriverView.html

For drivers, visit manufacturer of emergency system and of the manufacturer of the device that are the most common.
Control Panel - device - Graphics Manager - note the brand and complete model
your video card - double - tab of the driver - write version information. Now, click on update
Driver (this can do nothing as MS is far behind the certification of drivers) - then right-click.
Uninstall - REBOOT it will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat this for network - card (NIC), Wifi network, sound, mouse, and keyboard if 3rd party
with their own software and drivers and all other main drivers that you have.

Now in the system manufacturer (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) site (in a restaurant), peripheral
Site of the manufacturer (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI, for example) and get their latest versions. (Look for
BIOS, Chipset and software updates on the site of the manufacturer of the system here.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after
    each installation.

Always check in the Device Manager - drivers tab to be sure the version you actually install
presents itself. This is because some restore drivers before the most recent is installed (sound card drivers
in particular that) so to install a driver - reboot - check that it is installed and repeat as
    necessary.

Repeat to the manufacturers - BTW in the DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER device - check
    manually by model.

Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.

  • The search in Windows Explorer has stopped working properly - it does not find the files which are there, but will find other files that match the search criteria

    Window 7

Was working before, but have only allowed a number of updates to Windows that had been blocked for a while.

For example. Type 'safe' in the search box. It finds files and directories with 'security' in the title, but not the files and directories that I can see are there with 'safe' in the title.

When I search using the "safe * ' it seems to do exactly the same thing as"safe ".  It does not show only files beginning with 'safe'

My suggestion was not ' safe * ' but ' name of the file: ~ safe * "(without the quotes).

1 have you tried the methods mentioned in the post above?

Please get back with the results so we can help you better.

Method 1: You can also configure your computer in a clean boot state and check to see if the same problem happens.

By setting your boot system minimum state helps determine if third-party applications or startup items are causing the problem.

    Hi Roar4life88

    1. for how long have you been faced with this problem?
    2. did you of recent changes on the computer?

    Method 1:

You can perform a scan SFC and check. To Perform a Scan SFC -

    d. If everything is correct you should, after the scan, see the following message "resource protection Windows not found any breach of integrity".
    e. once the scan is finished, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check.

Check the link below for further guidance on scan SFC - mentioned

Why you are posting in the forum, IE?  Maybe the reason why you try to use the CP is to enter Internet Options?  If so, you can do it without the help of Windows Explorer (at least on your operating system) starting (using the Task Manager if necessary): control.exe inetcpl.cpl

Otherwise what your problem probably means is that you have added something new to the root of the control panel which is not compatible with your OS, causing thus the Windows Explorer (not IE) crashing.  In this case, the same way you could get in Add Remove programs without involving Windows Explorer by starting: control.exe appwiz.cpl

You can get help more informed by post on a forum that specializes in performance and Maintenance of your operating system.

    General troubleshooting

Game crashes can have several different causes depending on your system. The best way to determine that the problem is caused by East follow this guide first:

    Troubleshooting game crashes

    Windows Vista users

There are several patches available for Vista users and Vista users with Nvidia cards. We recommend that you follow the Guide Windows Vista in its entirety.

    Anti-virus software

Some software anti-virus and anti-spyware such as Norton/Symantec, AVG 7.5, Avast, Spyware Doctor and Nod32 have been confirmed to cause the game crashes with Source engine games. If disabling your antivirus software or security is not enough, you can consider completely uninstalling these applications until an update is published by the developers of antivirus software that resolves these compatibility issues. More information found in the section troubleshooting game crashes FAQ linked above.

    Background applications

Graphically intense games such as half-life 2: Episode Two and Team Fortress 2 require a lot of your system resources to operate. Having background applications being run while you play can often result in the game engine competing for resources with other applications system. Often, this can cause the game to crash because it is not free enough for the game to use system resources. Please follow the guide below for more information:

    Disabling background Applications

It is also important to ensure that your system has enough available expanded memory. Please follow this guide for more information.

    WinMgmt /verifyrepository
If the system returns "referential WMI is not consistent", run this command:
    WinMgmt /salvagerepository
