  To start, I use a HP Pavilion dv6000 series (dv6748us to be exact) with Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) installed. (Service pack 2). About 6 months ago I got this laptop from what I believe was the conflicker virus (kept forwarding pages, arrested updates and antivirus programs, etc.) and I managed to get Windows Update works again. My help and Support did not work well, it only worked in Mode without failure, so I did some research and tried a bunch of suggested corrections (update the registry, etc.) and got it work yet once again. I don't know if one of the tools that I used all by setting the Help & Support could have caused problems that I now (as I literally tried everything under the Sun until I got to work), but my Windows Update does not work properly again.

  A few weeks ago, I installed some updates and restarted the computer, but updates did not finish install on reboot.   I don't know that this is not what you want to hear.  However, from the beginning of your notes, you said that the system was installed with an invalid Windows operating system CD and since you bought Windows XP SP 2, which is the authentic product.  If I am wrong please correct me.

  If you try to run SFC scannow from Windows XP SP2, you will continue to receive the request for the additional CD cover Service Pack 3.

  If you have two options:

  (1) do a fresh install with the Windows XP SP2 and upgrade to SP3 on sites I've proposed below.

  or

  (2) simply download the Service Pack 3 of one of the websites below and use this CD to finish the scannow SFC.

  I think you'd be a lot better off takeing the time to back up all your important documents and files.

  Go to: http://www.gtopala.com/SIW-download.html and download the free version of SIW.

  This will give you at least with all the files and informaition about your device drivers that are currently on your system now.  I had the IT Pro version for years and would be with her.  I know that this version provide you all the keys for any product you may have and no password specified for email or the system.  I know that the free version will not provide passwords, but it can provide you with product keys. If you have lost or misplaced one of your applications can be valuable.  Most of the time, you can download the product if you have the key you're in business.

  Errors that you receive above I think that you are still able to access the internet.  If yes I would like to download the SP3 since

  Of course, once this is done you should be able do a fresh install with the purchased Windows XP Sp 2 now you can install the Service Pack from Windows Update or make a CD from the above address or the ISO image from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2FCDE6CE-B5FB-4488-8C50-FE22559D164E.
