Installation disk hard second - "Uninitialized" says and will not let me format

In disk management, I see my new drive hard second 1 TB.  It recognizes the 931,51 Go drive, unallocated.  When I walk through the process to configure a partition and format, I get the following error message:
"The operation cannot be performed because the disk is not initialized."

I must have missed a step, but reading that I did it is not clear to me what I missed.  Help?

Thanks in advance.  Branden

Figured it out.  The player appeared in the red list a small arrow down through the disc.  By right clicking on the arrow pointing down, they gave me the option to "initialize disk".  Now am going forward with the formatting process.  Confused, but hope someone saves some time.
