Internal HD not mounted and not disk utility

Hi Mac community.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro with 4 internal drive bays.  For now, they are all busy with special various backup and storage drives.  One of my backup / storage drives (not my boot drive) does not appear as "mounted" on the desktop.  It does not also appear in the disk utility.  System information shows 'Unknown' for 3 Bay where the reader resides.  The missing disk is used to save another internal drive that stores the image files almost exclusively and is not a boot disk.  The missing disk is about 3-4 years of age and is called only in service for a few minutes a day when Super Duper asks it to do his homework, who will quickly backup.  In addition, Super Duper is not able to find the drive to back up either.

I think one way to obtain the missing disk health trouble would close, exchanging one of the other disks in its place, restart and see if the drive and the system information utility recognize another drive in the Bay (#3) in question.  This way I know if I have a dead drive or if there is some other hardware problem associated with this Bay.

This sounds like a good approach?  Are there other means within the system to check the status of the missing disk, (not start)?

Thank you!  Mike

Yes, it's an excellent course of action.

Also when I hang up my iMac running os x yosemite on the hard drive can be used and seems to work very well.

I tried to reformat the hard disk, but it has failed it is still not recognized on my mac pro book

    Hello amartnez,

Thank you for using communities of Apple Support.

From your post, I see that your drive external hard seagate was pulled from the socket during backup with Time Machine, and now it is not recognized by your MacBook Pro. I know how it is important to ensure that you are able to connect your external drive to your Mac. I have something I want you to try.

Because the external hard drive seems to be working on another computer (iMac), please try a different USB port on your MacBook Pro and see if it recognizes the external hard drive on the desktop and in disk utility. If so, that means you have a problem with this specific USB port on the MacBook Pro.

    See you soon!

  • SSD does not appear in the disk utility when you try to reformat the MacBook Pro

I'm trying to reformat my Macbook Pro (mid-2012), because I had the folder with a question mark by trying to turn it on. Once I started the recovery process online and open disk utility my SSD does not, so I can't delete it or reinstall the OS. Any help would be appreciated.

(Since 1) isn't the SSD with the disk utility program and 2), you get a folder with a question mark when you initialize I would say that your SSD is dead. Unfortunately, probably looking to a visit to your genius of Apple.

  • Love at first sight and disk utility

    Hello

With the old version of disk utility, I could start in the repair using the command + R section, click disk utility, and then copy my computer perfect HD over to another Mac connected via Thunderbolt and in target disk mode. This process took about 7 minutes. Is it possible to do it again? Use the migration wizard is not a viable option because it takes over 30 minutes to copy it to the users and applications and I have several computer at image Labs.

You try to restore your hard drive to another on a target machine?     If so, you can always do this.   Reboot from Recovery HD and use disk utility.  To 1 restore another disc, you select 1st target drive.  Then on the Edit menu, select Restore.  Then in the drop-down list, select the source drive.  If you love at first sight, this should go pretty fast.

    Hi Apple/community,

    I need a help.

What it means? Operation failed! My MacBook Pro does not start. It cuts after the loading screen. What will happen?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Well, it seems that your MacBook Pro hard drive has failed and cannot be repaired by disk utility.

At this point, there is no need to delete. A new copy of Mac OS X can be installed directly over the old copy. This process replaces the components of Mac OS X on a file by file basis and adds missing ones, there will be no major throwing away what anyone, unless there is a power failure.

You have already run disk first aid.

Now use mode of recovery (command + R to start) to "Re-install Mac OS X. It should install the latest revision of the main version that you ran last.

  • Installed boot camp at halfway and do not appear in disk utility. But it takes place in the hard drive.

I am really frustrated and tried to solve the problems of this days no result. Would be very grateful for advice please!

So I went before partition my MacBook Air using boot camp. It only allowed me to partition of 22 gb because of space constraints. While he was the partitioning, I forced to leave bootcamp as I changed my mind and I wanted to clear more space before partitioning. However, my watch storage now that 22 GB is used up (probably the bootcamp partition). However because I left bootcamp while partitioning, I couldn't find bootcamp on my disk utility partition. How can I delete the bootcamp hidden partition? It takes too much space on my hard drive. Help, please! Thank you very much!

  • Samsung EVO850 plus disk Util is not smart

    HI -.

I have a MacBook Pro 15 "late 2011, for which I bought a 1 to Samsung EVO 850 SSD."  I want to replace the internal MacHD with the SSD.

I have the external SSD drive hooked to the MBP using a StarTech USB2 for SATA docking station.  Using disk utility I erased the SSD and reformatted using OSX journaled Extended.  The process took seconds to complete.  However when I check the S.M.A.R.T. status on the SSD TO THE shows 'not supported '.  Also (probably part of the same problem) - if I try to restore the MacHHD on the SSD I get the message "the restore process failed" and "volume of the Source is read-write and cannot be disassembled, so it cannot be copied from block.

-What is the problem?  I don't know that this EVO 850 is compatible with this MBP.  Disk utility is quite simple.  But the result is not SMART.  Did I miss a step?  How can I reformat this SSD to support the Smart function.

    TIA your entry,

    Josh

    -What is the problem?

The only thing wrong with what you mentioned is your understanding of it. everything works as expected.

I have the external SSD drive hooked to the MBP using a StarTech USB2 for SATA docking station.

in general, docking stations, in individuals and external drives do not support SMART status.

Smart seemed like a good idea when it was invented, but it fell away, far from being useful. It indicates usually that your reader has a hard time AFTER that the car exploded. Or he reports that your drive is about to die, three years before his actual death.

If I try to restore the MacHHD on the SSD, I get the message "the restore process failed" and "volume of the Source is read-write and cannot be disassembled, so it cannot be copied from block".

You cannot copy the Volume Mac OS X is running to use the copy of disk utility that is on the Source Volume. Disk utility insists the drive mounted, so that no one else has the ability to change the contents of the disc while you are copying. You can't unmount the disk because Mac OS X is started from, so you cannot copy the path you want.

If you want to make this copy, start under Recovery HD (which is another partition on your boot drive) and use the disk utility it. Then you can copy the Mac OS X Volume (but not the Volume of recovery HD, because it will be busy.

  • Disk utility says Everything is Fine, when it's not

I am trying to understand what the point of disk utility. I checked (several times) my boot drive (SSD) and a second internal HARD disk, disk utility says it all goes well and nothing in need of repair. Meanwhile, I can say drives are certainly * not * ok since I get poor system performance, and the HARD disk is sprayed randomly when I access/copy some files.

I went and got the SMART utility and Disk Warrior, SMART utility written my boot drive is FAILING and my HARD drive has FAILED.

I am now under DW on it, but I'm pretty annoyed that utility disk is essentially useless to see if there are problems with the discs...

Disk utility and disk warrior can only repair the files in the directory, they are unable to repair a disk that is physically / mechanically failing.

  • Windows 8.1 with Bootcamp installed in El Capitan. Do not delete with Bootcamp so I used the disk utility. Now, Windows always tries to start with an error, the 'other' space illustrates.

Long story short, I installed windows 8.1 using Bootcamp, went very well. I was just curious how it would go.

in any case, tonight, I decided to delete the Windows partition (Bootcamp Partition), and I got an error in Bootcamp that says "sorry couldn't do Mac OS partition a new»

With that I went to the disk utility and tried to partition the disk on a partition again, which it did, but now I have 40 GB of "other space". I literally have nothing stored on this computer, until I installed Windows 8.1 which was not there.

Also, when I start it up I always get Windows start first if I do not hold Option, then it goes to the blue screen, obviously because he's not here.

I started to recover, tried to fix it, verify, erase free space, etc.. I'm running a MacBook Pro 13 "128GB 2015.

On a Mac of 2015, the disc is divided into a group of logical volumes and Volume for OS X, and a partition for Windows. If BCA fails to restore it correctly, the part of Windows do not get properly gathered in the LVG/LV. The other questions you have, it's that there are remnants of the Microsoft your EFI partition Boot code.

To solve both, the easiest and safest method is

1 backup OSX and all of your files - use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

    2. boot into Internet recovery (CMD + Opt + R) - OS X: on OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

    3. click on Utilties-> disk utility and erase your entire internal drive.

    4. restoration of OSX and your files - use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

This requires another external drive that can accommodate TM backup - backup disks that you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support .

  • Drive external hard Mac has shown in the past but does not now show in disk utility. How can I get it back?

I'm going crazy trying to find an answer to this question! My external hard drive has shown in the past but not now shows in disk utility. My OS is X El Capitan.

I tried to turn off my computer then unplug my external hard drive waiting for 30 seconds back on my computer and plug my hard drive with no joy.

    I hope someone can help.

    Hi willy of San Jacinto.

I understand that your external hard drive is no longer seen by your computer. I know it's important to have a good backup location, and for that to work, I am so happy to provide assistance with this.

Read this article on troubleshooting USB devices:

OS X El Capitan: If a USB device does not work

If your computer is yet to see the hard drive after following these steps, it would be interesting to test this drive on another computer if available. If you continue to have problems, I suggest contacting the manufacturer of the hard disk on a hardware failure possible.

Thank you for using communities of Apple Support, cheers!

  • Disk utility doesn't work do not at all

The problem started with my iMac (10.11.6) slows down. I rebooted, it worked fine for a while, and then the problem comes back. I tried three times to use disk utility, but every time it's the same thing: the start box appears on the screen, i. by "tap" first aid, then... nothing. Nothing at all. I then tried to force out the utility disk, but for some reason any Force Quit option suddenly didn't work. Everything I had was the ball Beach and the non-functioning du box. So what's happening? Virus (I have Trend Micro, but nothing is perfect)? The age?

Uninstall Trend Micro anti-virus software. It is not necessary on a Mac and is probably causing the problems you describe with disk utility.

Third party software anti-virus is not necessary on a Mac and cannot cause problems.

  • Disk utility will not let me click on the partition.

I've updated to El Capitan, disk utility since refuses to let me click on partition.

Accidentally, I partitioned my disk flash before I updated and so I need to cancel, because now I have 200 MB of storage on it.

I tried using terminal but I have been unable to fix this way, too.

Can someone help me with this?

    Thank you

Make sure that all your files are backed up. Accidents happen and I'd hate for you to lose all data.

Are you trying to repartition the boot disk? If I understand correctly, your hard disk is currently partitioned, and you need to recover a single correct hard drive?

You can't repair the disk hard while you use the hard disk. To get the partition on a single disk, boot from the recovery disc.

Restart the computer and press immediately on and hold command-R until you see a loading bar, and then release the keys. Once the recovery disc starts, choose your language (if it asks you to) and then again open disk utility. Now, select your hard drive and delete the extra partition. It should tell you "this will not affect your files...". "but if he says that you will lose all data, STOP. Make sure that you remove the extra partition without data on this subject. I'm guessing that it's called "Untitled 1" or something that affects unless you named it something different.
