IPhoto, Synology, NAS

Hello

I have a mac book pro, which runs from storage, mainly due to volume of the iPhoto library. I also have a synology NAS.

What are my alternatives to move my iPhoto library to the NAS without losing the access from my other devices (i.e. with the help of my iPhone or iPad that are also related to the same iPhoto library).

In other words, I would create my own iCloud, using my SIN.

Kind regards

I actually use the Photo, if it makes a change!

Just out of curiosity, what level of overhead that you consider the size of the individual files would cause during a backup? In addition, we don't know what is his rate of connection or flow of how the card can support. He never specified this information, judging by its speed, and assuming that he is close to his router, it doesn't look like it is connected to a flow of link 300mbps.

  • WSX on Synology NAS?

My goal is to access my virtual machines from a tablet or a smartphone. With WSX on my Windows host computer, I managed to control them pretty well (instead of using a client such as VNC or Teamviewer remote control).

However, it would be easier to run WSX directly on the Synology NAS server on which most of my virtual machines is stored on a Samba share in all cases, and that works 24/7 in any case. With what CPU would that work? A certification as a 'VMware ready' (as for DS412 + and DS712 +) is essential for WSX work?

WSX is not a part of the 'VMware Ready' certification program. Your SIN is probably recognized as storage and WSX will not work. (Although we do not have
tried internally.) Even if you managed to get working on Synology WSX, you would still need an instance of Workstation or ESX elsewhere. WSX alone cannot host or run the virtual machine. In your case, you always have your Windows host machine upwards where Workstation is installed.

  • Backup on a Synology NAS photos

I have a NAS Sonologie DS115j. Is there an easy way to back up photos on the NAS? "Show Package Contents" on the photo library file is an option, but that seems to be a ridiculous way to copy a file to a different location.  By selecting an exporter of files to a separate location also seems harder than it needs to be.  Has anyone came up with an easy solution, instead of copying the entire photo library?

    I'm on OSX 10.10.5
    and NAS Synology DSM 5.2

Do not back up a library of Photos to a NAS server.  The format of the server does not support the complex structure of the library with its database relational complex, the links between files and the required access permissions.  It is not supported as a viable backup for Photos or iPhoto library support.

The backup drive must be formatted as shown in this screenshot and be directly connected either USB, FW, or stroke, for the Mac.

  • Installation of iTunes, Synology NAS,

I can get a good guide on how to use my 716 + NAS synology, to store all my music files, and when I open itunes on my iMac, MacBook air, or windows laptop or even when I use AppleTV, I can access this music (if it is not stored locally on my computer)?

Also, I tried this in the past, but with itunes on my iMac to restart, it would never ride my share, so he always missed the location default library itunes (locally) and mess substance upward.

I see also synology has an Itunes Server package, that would be a solution?

    Thank you

First, be aware that there are no rare posts here on NAS problems with iTunes.  NAS is great conceptually, but in execution of problems that can occur with iTunes and have done so for more than a decade.  Everyone makes fingers to everyone, but the main thing is that you always run a risk of a library mutilated.  Better is to use a simple external drive and use the NAS for backup.

I think the server package is pretending to be a shared library iTunes without having an active version of iTunes open at the time.  Have you read the manual or online for the NAS documentation? I don't have one and what I know is people post questions here.

The reason why you had problems before is your SIN is going to sleep and not wake up before launching iTunes.  The same thing would happen even if you use a simple external hard drive.  If it doesn't happen at startup, you can try to put an alias to the iTunes on the server application, then an alias to this alias in your computer and start iTunes this way, not directly from the computer.

  • WAG54GX2 ping timeout Server NAS Synology DS215j

I'm trying to connect my new Synology NAS server on my home network.  The Linksys WAG54GX2 Gateway is to see him and NAS assigning IP 192.168.1.100.  However, I can't not conntect to the web page of NAS servers, configure.  A direct connection to my lapto to the NAS works very well, but it just does not connect on my local network.  I tried ping the NAS server and 1-2 each 4 pings sent to get lost.

Anyone have any suggestions for settings that I need to do? Everything for the local network is currently by default and I am connected via an Ethernet cable to one of the four ports.

It seems that the problem is now solved! I spent a lot of time trying to solve it today. I had gotten to the point where I could connect via a direct cable, even with F-Secure internet protection active but could not connect through my gateway. I found that ping would get no response to the 25 to 50% of messages sent to the Synology DS.

After leaving the Synology DS for 2-3 hours, I came to see that settles in itself and that it was now on a solid, connect to the Linksys router. So, problem solved itself, but I don't know how or why!

  • Disorganized iTunes Media after moving to NAS

    Hello

I have moved my iTunes for Synology NAS library and am maintaining the logical structure of the different media files.

On the NAS, I created volume 'Media' where I moved to the iTunes library and where I want all kinds of media to reside and to share with others (Synology, Plex) apps. This volume is now the default iTunes media folder.

I have relinked the library in ITunes without problem and can see everything as before, but when for example I am adding new content to music to iTunes (with 'Keep media' and 'Copy media in the iTunes folder') organized checked it lands directly in the 'media' instead of ' Media /Music"." Why and how can I solve this problem?

I want to keep the structure of file like this:

    Media (volume)

    -Music

    -Artist name

    -Album name

    -Movies

    -Name of film

    TV - series

    -Show Name

    -Books

    -Etc.

Is this possible? Is to select a volume than the main iTunes folder of media app messes things why?

It seems OK, I had to «Organize library...» "after moving and all the orphaned files have been moved to /Music they belong.

I think I like iTunes a little more now

  • Toshiba 46YL875: no pictures and videos streaming from NAS

I have a problem with the media player on my TV and hope you can help.
I have a 46YL875. Now, I have installed a Synology NAS DS213j. I have installed the DLNA media server.
The TV recognizes it. Also the MP3 are played fine.

But no photos (jpg) or videos (mp4) are displayed.
If I get the same files on a USB key, they are played without a problem.

Any hint how to solve? No patch or update FW, that could help?

    Hello

There is a difference of playing files on USB or streaming files using NAS.
I recommend the page 106 in the user manual:
    http://www.Toshiba-OM.NET/LCD/PDF/English/YL875-424655-English.PDF

Using NAS you should check the details and notes for the DMS (digital media server)

For example: video files with the file extension mp4 and M4V are supported using video/audio codec H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC).

  • Synology Diskstation short very slow with OSX

I use synology diskstation for 2 years and have never really found it to be very slow when it is connected to my mac pro retina book.

    Plug NAS...

Synology NAS Office DS213J Bay 2 enclosure £159.99

Red WD 3 TB for NAS 3.5 inch desktop hard drive - OEM £89.00

    3 TB Seagate 3.5 inch 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache hard SATA3 £89.99

2 drives installed - 1 set up in mirror

I measured the speeds and get 3 MB/s reading and writing on wi fi. Direct connection to a gigabit switch that directly relates to NAS both via CAT6 - makes about 35 MB/s reading and 50 MB/s in writing.

I read a review that has measured the same device and got a 74.5 MB/s write speed and a 56.4 MB/s read speed

When you run windows in bootcamp on the same machine, I get much better performance.

I tried to remove a drive (speed tests are the same for each single drive)

    10.11.2 running OSX

Is there a particular issue or the goal or the question you are interested in here?   It is clear that you are looking for performance and a few comparisons, but it's not clear (to me) where you're going with this.  Can also check with Synology people, too.

    A few generic comments follow...

In general...  A Wi - Fi connection is slow, and Wi - Fi with interference makes even slower connections.      Descent and with a tailwind, I expect a little more than 200 Mbps (megabits per second, not megabytes) with semi-recent-grade Wi - Fi 5 GHz dual-slot, assuming a backhaul wired on the gigabit NAS and assuming no interference from Wi - Fi or claim.

Rusty storage rotation is slow and subject to the configuration.

Red WD appears without RPM - "Intellipower", with some comments showing a player ~ 5400 RPM, which is quite slow and at no time access in the technical sheets.  If a seller do not post access time and transfer speeds for a disk drive, the device is not intended to be a particularly fast device.  WD indicates both in the note on the sheet, too.

For most RAID controllers, RAID-1 mirror means the two Scriptures - written to each disk in the mirror game - must fill in before the host i/o is complete.   This slows down the write speed.   If the RAID controller is intelligent - and not all RAID controllers are very smart, then it will give you the first available reading rates from the game of mirror, based on the position of rotation.  Many will just take a drive and give you the e/s as the sector turns around, so you will be waiting on average a demi-revolution.

If you want a faster access to the storage, stay off WiFi and use two SSD storage or upgrade these disks to 15 K RPM disks configured as a RAID 0 striped.   High-end and storage gear company - the older, hard-disk-based - gets its performance to have zillions of small discs of 15 K RPM configured with disk and controller wholesale large caches, controllers (by rotation-aware) smart and with RAID 10 storage configurations or similar.

To compare the performance of the device, the configuration of these benchmarks and what you are testing is important.  Reference material, as well as the speeds measured since the test of Windows.

One of our iMac on 10.6 can find the SIN as it is another normal computer but on my iMac and another on 10.10, no results appear. I tried to re - indexing the shared folder and the car according to the instructions from Apple (Spotlight: how to re - index folders or volumes - Apple Support) but it doesn't seem to work. I also tried which allows indexing with terminal (https://jonathansblog.co.uk/how-to-enable-spotlight-indexing-on-a-network-drive) and it does not work either. • Problems connecting to the local network with NAS

So we have a private network to work. On this network we have implemented a Synology NAS. We are constantly backup of files, files, adding files, etc. updated excel... There is a lot of traffic on this subject. Recently it was kickoff of people with error messages like "Device name already in use. It could be a problem with just the NAS, but I think it might be a problem with the network or something that I could deal with different parameters. The problem occurs when there are a lot of people on the network, not necessarily work outside the SAR, which has a static IP address. Because of my ignorance of networks, I don't know what information to include to help describe the problem or put in place, so do not hesitate to ask!

Any help would be greatly appreciated, more on only an opportunity to learn more about networking is also good!

  • WRT54GC and Synology DS107

    Hello

I have a Linksys WRT54GC router and a Synology DS107, both on the latest firmware, but somehow the following things do work more (used to work with my DSL router)

    * Download directly from the Synology

Being of a drive for laptop XP Edition mapping windows family

Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

    Bram Vermeij

    Hello Bram

Your DSL is connected to the WAN port on your LinkSys Router? Which port is your connected Synology NAS box?

What kind of error do you get when you try to download from the Synology NAS box?

What kind of error you get when you try to map a drive o the XP box?

You know the IP address of the Synology box? If it responds to a ping?

Have you power cycled anything? I suggest all tension, starting with the laptop, then Synology, then router and DSL. Feed their place in reverse, pause for 30 seconds before moving on to the next section.

Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

  • Cannot map the subfolders to Synolgy NAS

Hello - I have just purchased a synology NAS and trying to map to it from my Win 7 PC. I get a strange behavior:

All readers shared on the NAS have permission to read/write explicitly for the admin and my individual user account that I put in place. Windows file service is enabled, and I am able to access the shared via the UNC path drives and create new folders in their breast.  However, I can only map main shared drive, but not all folders that I create to the breast. For example:

\\DiskStation\Users - I can map to it by right-clicking and choosing "map network drive".

\\DiskStation\Users\myname - I cannot map to this, the option is not available when right clicking. Even when I create the Windows folder, then immediately try to map to it.

In addition, when I MAP the main shared folder, while the drive the folder path field is filled with the path but is grey, as well as the button browse the mapping.

I searched in the Synology forums but can't find any references to this question. Is this something which is normally a limitation in Windows? Any ideas what is happening out there?

    Thanks for any help
