is it better to restore from time machine or from a backup cloned
I just got my replaced Mac hard drive. Of course, I did a backup first - two, in fact. One is my Time Machine stored on my Time Capsule backup. The other is a backup cloned, made with SuperDuper!, stored on an external hard drive.
Now, the mac is back with it's all new hard drive, and I was wondering: is there an advantage to restoring from a backup vs the other? Is "Restore from Time Machine backup" a better option than with SuperDuper! to restore the clone bootable? Or vice versa? Or does really make any difference at all?
Additional info: the TM and Clone were both looking at the same time (give or take a few minutes) and the Mac, at the time where it has been saved, ran the Mavericks. I also asked Apple to install the Mavericks on the new hard drive instead of El Capitan.
Thanks in advance.
It really makes no difference that you are restoring from.

Do to restore an iPod touch from backup, using iOS 6.1.6?
Yes, as long as the device that does the backup iOS 6.1.6 and during restoration iOS 6.1.6 or later
To restore backup see:
Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support
If you restore from a backup of iCloud apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from backup iTunes, applications and music must be in iTunes since synchronized as music media library and apps are not included in the backup of the iOS device what iTunes does.
You can re-download most of iTunes purchases by:
Download after purchase from the App Store and iTunes Store iBookstore
I have an update application that can be bad and want to restore from a backup iTunes just that App. Is this possible and if yes, what is the process?
Thank you. Best regards, R.J. Wilson
Synchronize the iTunes app. You may need to remove the application on the device first otherwise iTunes may think it's already there. If it is a current application, you can also re - download it directly from the iTunes Store with your device via iCloud.
I cannot restore from a backup and don't know why.
I have a Crucial SSD of BX100 in my mid 2010 MacBook Pro. It is divided into two partitions. I got Snow Leopard on a partition and Yosemite on the other. For some reason any I've never understood the Snow Leopard guarded beachballing partition. This happened if often that I decided to wipe the disk and reinstall from my backup, do it before the beachballing began to occur.
But I can't restore. I wiped the drive of a Snow Leopard system, repaired and reformatted. The drive is not Core Storage, this is Mac OS extended (journaled). When I try to restore the restore on it works for about two minutes and then stops. Finally, I get a message saying that the disc has been ejected incorrectly.
I noticed that when I receive information on the drive, an element appears different from other readers and which corresponds to the element, owners enabled: no each other drive I've seen says owners enabled: Yes. Is it all just because there is no system on the partition?
Also "ignore ownership on this Volume" must be checked or unchecked?
Suggestions welcomed, I am baffled by this.
Snow Leopard erase and install
- Insert the Snow Leopard DVD in the optical drive and restart the computer.
- Immediately after hearing the chime hold down the C key.
- Release the button when the Apple logo appears and wait for loading to complete.
- After the installer loads, choose your language and click on the continue button. When the menu bar appears select utility drive in the Utilities menu. After disk utility charges select the entry out-bumpy in the list aside (mfgr. size ID and disc drive.) In the right side of the disk utility window, click the Partition tab. Set the number of sheets to (1) on the menu drop down. Click the Options button and select GUID, click on OK, the value of the Mac OS Extended journaled format type. Finally, click on the apply button.
- Once the format is complete, quit disk utility. Continue with the installation of OS X and follow the directions.
- Once installation is complete, the computer will restart in the installation wizard. After completing the Setup Wizard, you will use a new installation of Snow Leopard. Open the software update and install updates recommended.
- If you plan to sell or to give to your remote computer, then proceed as follows: once you reformat your hard disk and reinstall Snow Leopard, the computer restarts with a welcome screen. To leave the Mac in a State OOTB (Out Of The Box), do not continue with the Setup program. Instead, press the command and Q keys to stop the computer. The installation wizard will guide you the new owner through the installation procedure, after that it turns on the computer.
- Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 v1.1 updated Combo. If necessary. It is not necessary if you are selling or giving your computer away.
Like many times before, I This Time Machine Sparsebundle NAS based backup errors trying to force me to remove all my backups before creating a new - and I turn down this time.
I found this article http://www.garth.org/archives/2011, ased 08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b-backup - errors.html which seems to be great, but already at the beginning that the commands do not work for me any more:
MacBookPro: ~ root # chflags nouchg /Volumes/Data/MacBookPro.sparsebundle r
MacBookPro: ~ root # hdiutil attach nomount - noverify - noautofsck - /Data/MacBookPro.sparsebundle
hdiutil: attach failed - no such file or directory
The path to the sparsebundle is TimeCapsule/Data/MacBookPro.sparsebundle.
I have no idea of this Terminal stuff, so I am at a loss.
For further help, thank you very much!
I did a clean install of Mavericks and CC restored from a backup, and can not get one of the applications to load at all.
properly install adobe products.
at this point, just uninstall cc on your computer, clean by use the CC cleaning tool to resolve installation problems. CC, CS3 - CS6 then install the application of office cc, https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud
Use the desktop application to install your programs of cc.
I have an El Capitan iMac 2.93 GHz w/3 TB merger and after a fatal accident, I am faced with the deadlock either of perform a recovery to the internet and to install OS X ML - or to restore from a volume of TM. I also have a carbon copy backup Clone for a few weeks but discovered it is NOT BOOTABLE.
Before you do anything, I would like just to start in any version of Mac OS X and copy files from the HDD to get through the current backup - just in case the TM thing does not work.
Back to ML sounds painful due to the multiple UPDATES, it will get current.
Restore from the TM volume is likely to be a lengthy process and can just restore the State before the accident - still affecting him until the accident.
In the end, you need to install a clean - but right now my El Capitan bootable Installer thumb drive goes down - http://osxdaily.com/2015/09/30/create-os-x-el-capitan-boot-install-drive/
TM - or ML?
The fatal accident took out your recovery partition too? If that was the case and that you want a clean install to use Internet to erase and reinstall the original OS. Upgrade to El Capitan is a step in a do not multiple process that you don't need to do incremental updates or upgrades in order to get the last El Cap on the app store. Once you have the OS where you want, you can use your TM to restore only the desired items.
So, I recently met several problems with my old mac. He started acting upward with the blinking folder and question mark more often. So I did multiple time machine backups and have since then tried to reinstall the OS and many other options, but it looks like my mac middle of 2007 has had its day. So I bought a new mac and tried to restore the back upward on the external hard drive. I get the message that his back is an older version and it cannot be restored and I should use from the other mac migration assistant.
So the question is: If the first mac is burned and I can not restore settings etc of the time external hard disk machine, how to restore the whole upward? Can I transfer files only?
Very much appreciated.
You cannot restore data in time machine just like that. You use the data transfer assistant to recover your old records to your new Mac.
The data that you used time machine made to your old mac are not available to your new mac. There is limitation of the system.
Hope this could help you.
For example, recently my laptop (MacBookPro7, 1.) Intel Core 2 Duo. 2.4 GHz. memory to 6 GB) came up with a message saying to upgrade to el capitan, and after some research to see if my computer were compatible (OS X 10.6.8) I've updated. However, I found that many things had changed in ways that I didn't like as well as my laptop is slow. So I watched it come back back and followed the instructions of restoration (command-R, choose the time machine backup, etc.). Unfortunately since doing so, I lost many of my applications provided with the computer, and I can not find them even in the applications folder (Calculator, preferences system, overview and a few others), I have also noticed that when I try to access the time machine preferences or system preferences they come in the form of files called content and there is no way to access it.
If anyone knows how I can find my apps or even be able to access the settings, it would be much appreciated. I'm too scared to try redownload things where it makes things worse. However, I tried to go back and restore from time machine once again, but after having tried several times in vain to get to the right section again once I gave up.
Boot into Recovery (R command) and re-install OS X on top of your existing operating system.
I was looking for in Time Machine to restore an earlier version of Pages, but when I opened the time Machine in the Applications section is empty. Other files (Documents, downloads) watch the content, but only applications have nothing to show. What is problem?
(1) requests have been excluded from Time Machine backups. Check Time Machine preferences / Options to ensure that Applications are not on the list of excluded items of backups.
(2) Time Machine is defective. The operating system will need to be reinstalled, since Time Machine is a part of Mac OS X.
Mac froze on startup. Had to full restore from Time Machine. Since then in FCPX 10.2/3 has experienced frequent crashes while trying to open some events. Now, I also know that there are no titles, generators or themes more. Help recover. What should I do?
Thanks for any help.
RRedownload the application on the App Store and trash your preferences.
After virus/malware unusable safari, I used my 'time machine' backups to restore my entire system (10.10.5). I had the "restore msg."
By design, it restarts. I get the apple logo and progress indicator, but the bar spend about a third of the way and restarting stops there. I tried
reboot several times with the same results. I then repeated the procedure for restoring above with a backup taken a week before and got the successful restore msg
but had the same result with the reboot. Don't know what to do next.
Starts in recovery (command-R) Mode and choose the option Install OS X. Have it reinstall the OS without wiping the drive. Who should make the drive to be bootable again.
I have a problem with the email backups in Time Machine. Maybe someone can help me?
Using iMac 21.5 OS X El Capitan 10.11.3.
For more than a year I do (automatic) backups with Time Machine on an external drive. Works perfectly, the time that I needed.
I now wanted to look for an older email. Open the Machine from the time to Mail in my Inbox, but all the backups that I can scroll to have an empty Inbox...!
Only the last screen shows my present e-mails in the Inbox, but all other screens even since the last backup, see the empty Inbox.
Read on the internet that more people suffer from the same problem.
Someone has any idea how to solve this problem?
All mailboxes are empty in the snapshots, or just this one?
