Other than the error message can connect to the Internet?

You can be confused by sloppy terminology used to describe how the computers are connected to the Internet.

At the time where most of the people connected to the Internet via a dial-up telephone line, the piece of equipment used for this was called a modem.

"High speed Internet" means today generally an Internet connection using DSL (hotline), or "cable" (which uses the coaxial cable that also the door "cable") or a FiOS (which is like the cable but uses a line of optical fiber instead of the coaxial cable).

Each of these technologies use a device generally called a "modem" which is connected between your computer and the line (phone line, DSL line, coaxial cable or optical fiber line) that enters your home.  Each of these modems is different; each is different from the original telephone modem; and none can be exchanged for all others.

Your 'SpeedStream 4200' is a DSL modem.  In fact, to confuse you more, it's a combination modem and DSL router.

Your error message may refer to the absence of a dial-up modem.

  • What do you do when the error occurs?
  • Please copy down the full text of the error message and hands, without paraphrase, in your next reply.
  • In most configurations using a DSL as the SpeedStream 4200 modem, it should be connected using an Ethernet - no USB cable.  Why do you think that "USB does not work?  Once again, please provide any error completely, without paraphrasing.
