I suggest you invest in one of these external fences. Install the SSD in who and clone internally externally with CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. Then move the external drive of the internal drive after the start of the SSD in the external to confirm the operation.

  The Snow Leopard is one of the more stable OS Ive ever used, but you won't have a lot of features.  Mavericks is in the Middle, has more features and is always quite stable. I would, however, try to reinstall El Capitan, or deleting some files to free up space.

  Yes, the MBP will work with a single module of RAM installed, but there will be a slight performance decrease.  A MBP 2012 will accept a module of 8 GB RAM.

  Install each RAM module individually in each slot, leaving the other empty.  If the two RAM modules work in a slot and not the other, the slot is faulty.  Sometimes the adjustment screw can resuscitate the slot.  If this is not the case, make an appointment at an Apple store for a FREE evaluation.
