Is there a totally free utility to free up space on my computer?
I am trying to find a way to clean old unnecessary files to free up space without using disk cleanup. I used it and it does not all at the same time.
Hi Katherine,
Welcome to the Microsoft Community and forums thanks for posting the question.
There is no option in Windows to free up disk no space another disk cleanup.
If you need another program for the same, you can search for the same thing by using your favorite search engine.

free up space on my computer by deleting photos
I want to free up space on my computer if I want to delete the photos saved on the computer
can you me tell step by step how to do this, these are photos I have saved in the computer, originally taken fromour camera or our ipods.Hello katwhitehouse,
I guess that you have backups of these photographs? If this isn't the case, I suggest that you back up to another drive, or a DVD.
Regarding the removal of photographs, it is a simple matter of opening the case were that the photographs are stored, by selecting each photograph, right-click on it and select delete in the menu drop-down. If you have lots of photos to remove games from the first then move to the last. Before clicking on the last of them, press the SHIFT key on your keyboard and hold it down while you click the last photo. All photography will be selected. Just a click on the selection, and in the drop-down menu, select Remove. All photographs will be then delete.

1 did you regular disk cleanup?
Here's a tutorial for disk cleanup: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html
The tutorial has made 2 parts.
The 1st part is the classic disk cleanup which will give you back some dsik spaces.
The 2nd part (more Options) is to remove all of your points except the most recent restoration. This will give bring you a ton of disk space. ATTENTION: you need to do TR = ure it not there no probem with your computer before you use more Options, because you won't restore to fall back on 'old' points.2. recommend installing CCleaner.
It's free.
Use it regularly and it will help recover you a lot of disk space back.
Attention, DO NOT use the register option. Saty away from him. Here is the download link: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner
3 invest in an external hard drive. Move all your personal files, such as picrures, documents, videos and program downloads on the external hard drive. Which will free up tons of space.
An external hard drive of 1 TB of capacity can be had for less than $ 150. 500 GB will be even cheaper. -

What is the best way to "clean up/free space" on my computer? Thank you
What is the best way to clean/free up space on my computer? Even do not know where to look to see how much space I use... Thank you.
A loss of main surface within each user profile would be penchant of EI for the storage of copies (or much) of almost every web page, your friend has already visited. Try to reduce the amount of temporary Internet files put in cache, which is huge by default. I always bring it back to a maximum of 50 MB. In Internet Explorer, click on tools > Internet Options > general, temporary files > settings.
Same principle for the Java cache. Start > Control Panel > Java > temporary Internet files > settings.
The System Volume Information is the folder in restoration of which WinXP system feature stores information to retrieve errors. By default, Windows XP sets aside a maximum of 12% of the size of the partition to store the information of the System Volume, but the amount of space reserved for this purpose can be adjusted by the user. Start > all programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > System Restore Settings, select the relevant partition and click settings. If you don't want to use the system at all, restore simply to turn off System Restore (start > all programs > Accessories > system tools > system, System Restore settings restore) and restart. This will remove all your Restore Points, thus freeing up hard disk space.
An another great space waster may be trash. By default, it takes up to 10% of the capacity of your hard drive. On today's big hard disks, it's a lot of waste. It can be set to a lower limit by right clicking the desktop Receycle Bin icon, select Properties, and using the scroll bar to reduce the maximum size to something more reasonable - 1% to 2% should be more than enough space.

I'm trying to free up space on my computer to uninstall programs I don't have. I currently have 70 programs installed and I noticed that the 2 are for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x 64), 3 are for Microsoft Visual c++ 2008 Redistributable - x 64 9.0.3, 3 are for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x 86 9.0.3, 1 for redistributable Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 (x 64) 11.0 and 1 Microsoft Visual C ++ Redistributable 2013 (x 64) 12.0. Can I uninstall the older programs and just keep the most recent, or do I have to keep all these? My Factory Image drive (D :) showed currently that I have 1.57 GB free to 10.6 GB.
Thank you
Remove programs to save the workspace is virtual waste of time. They take up very little space. The real culprits are usually videos and movies.
The size of your D drive is certainly not something with that you should be wrong.

Can I uninstall Lightroom 4 to free up space? [was: Photoshop/Lightroom]
I'm trying to free up space in my computer. I am currently using lightroom 5.7 but kept lightroom 4.6 on my computer. Can I uninstall lightroom 4.6 for free space. All the information recorded when I upgraded?
You can certainly uninstall older versions of Lightroom, but it won't release a huge amount of space, most likely your photos take much more space than the Lightroom program resumes. If you want to move the photos to another hard drive, let us know, we can provide instructions.
All the information recorded when I upgraded?
If you chose to update previous versions of Lightroom Catalog, it is then distributed to 5.7 LR. If you don't install the catalog Lightroom 5.7, so some of the information is still in the previous catalog file, and you need to upgrade to LR 5.7

I save the file, and then click Publish Movie. Everything goes well until the last step where the video is actually published. The window made a break for a while before you receive the following message;

is there a cleaner free update for old updates of windows. mine go back to 2010. If I delete them manually. I have to restart my computer for each of them. How to remove the 'old' and what goes back to remove.it looks like repetitions of 6 years
Cleaning Windows Update option is available only when you log on with administrator permissions.
Select Start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, right-click on disk cleanup, click on Run as Administrator. Scroll the menu drop down and you should see the option of cleaning of Windows Update. Check the box before this option.
Select Start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, cleaning disk to emptying your trash, delete temporary Internet files and other selected options. I recommend also you click Other Options , the System Restore tab and delete all but the last system restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Do a house cleaning and the dust of this hard drive:
You can free up disk space (will also help get rid of the things that you do not use) through the following steps:
Windows XP should take between 4.5 and 15 GB * with * an Office suite, editing Photo software, alternative Internet browser (s), various Internet plugins and a host of other things installed.

How to use disk cleanup
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/310312You can disable hibernation if it is enabled and you do not...
When you Hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the system memory in the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys file will always be equal to the amount of physical memory in your system. If you don't use the Hibernate feature and want to reclaim the space used by Windows for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:
-Start the Control Panel Power Options applet (go to start, settings, Control Panel, and then click Power Options).
-Select the Hibernate tab, uncheck "Activate the hibernation", and then click OK. Although you might think otherwise, selecting never under "Hibernate" option on the power management tab does not delete the hiberfil.sys file.
-Windows remove the "Hibernate" option on the power management tab and delete the hiberfil.sys file. You can control the amount of space your system restore can use...
1. Click Start, right click my computer and then click Properties.
2. click on the System Restore tab.
3. highlight one of your readers (or C: If you only) and click on the button "settings".
4 change the percentage of disk space you want to allow... I suggest moving the slider until you have about 1 GB (1024 MB or close to that...)
5. click on OK. Then click OK again. You can control the amount of space used may or may not temporary Internet files...

-On the general tab in the section 'Temporary Internet files', follow these steps:
-Click on 'Delete the Cookies' (click OK)
-Click on "Settings" and change the "amount of disk space to use: ' something between 64 MB and 128 MB. (There may be many more now.)
-Click OK.
-Click on 'Delete files', then select "Delete all offline content" (the box), and then click OK. (If you had a LOT, it can take 2 to 10 minutes or more).

The less you have to run all the time, most things you want to run will perform:
Use Autoruns to understand this all starts when your computer's / when you log in. Look for whatever it is you do not know using Google (or ask here.) You can hopefully figure out if there are things from when your computer does (or connect) you don't not need and then configure them (through their own built-in mechanisms is the preferred method) so they do not - start using your resources without reason.
You can download and use Process Explorer to see exactly what is taking your time processor/CPU and memory. This can help you to identify applications that you might want to consider alternatives for and get rid of all together.

This isn't 100% necessary - but I'd be willing to bet that you would gain some performance and features in making this part.

Free disk space on the C partition
Separated from this thread.
I am also having the same problem. I am running Vista Home Premium SP2. I was getting close to complete on my drive C (13% free space). I was shocked to see how quickly it filled up, almost as if he did it by himself. I was downloading a lot so I had no idea how it happened. I ran each program cleaning and each antivirus that I had to try to make room. I cleaned up program files deleted a bunch of audio and video files, and it does not seem to do much more of a difference. I shut down the computer for the night and is returned to him the next morning. I ran and bought a few flash drives to transfer files more and when I booted up I checked the hard drive and it was back to 48% free space (as it was before). I have no idea what happened, but so far, it seems to be fixed...? one of the cleansers I ran also ccleaner.
