It is not possible to delete files with characters draw in file names.

If you copy this file name:

MyPrefs␀␀

And paste as the name of a file on your computer to El Capitan you not be able to remove it.

If your computer cannot start in an earlier version of Mac OS X the only option I found was to format the drive and reinstall from upward (without restoring the file of course)

If you're like me and have more than 10 TB of data, this can be something of a pain in the anus.

For now, I resorted to a file of copies of each disc in the trash, move the offending in its respective folder file and returning the file via this folder to his house by car. I then turn the invisible folder so I don't have to deal with errors of garbage every time I remove a file.

Until any of you tell me to use a terminal command, boot from a USB key, or use the restore mode. Try it yourself and failure.

I put a little effort in an installation of linux thumbdrive I read on, but could not find one that was compatible with the new processor of skylake, but it worked fine on my old mac pro

This was not the case in previous versions of the operating system.

Non-alphabetic and non-numeric symbols are not recommend for naming files.

  • Windows install-"error 1325 - 'Documents' is not a valid short file name"; After upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, cannot load new software. ____

After an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, everything on the system seemed to work properly. up to what I tried to re - install everything deleted software or install new software.  As soon as Windows Installer starts the following error message appears: "error 1325 - 'Documents' is not a valid short file name.

If this could have something to do with the new pads MSFT security permissions on folders (with padlock) during a upgrade as well as related hidden junctions by compared to the user by the system?

I tried to install the update system of Lenovo and MSFT Windows Installer Clean Up clean in the hope that the software would help alleviate my problems. See below the link on advice from MSFT on the same error.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/%2Fkb%2F328162

Unfortunately, I cannot even load the previously recommended THAT MSFT software to solve this error.  I also tried to install the software as 'Run as Administrator' and in 'Safe Mode '.  Even if I could not load the software recommended to MSFT, I was able to install iTunes to Apple through Apple Software Update, I guess, that they do not use Windows Installer.

With the new structure of junction there is several files or links to the same folder across file system, if it is a folder authorization number which specific files/links are I need to remove restrictions?

Any help would be appreciated, if not I'll have to do a clean install and individually reinstall each piece of software... Thank you.

I think I found the solution for this point, because I have just encountered the same problem in our environment and here's what I did to solve it:

-Create a higher level permissions at the root of the folder redirection (for example \\servername\mydocredirfolder): grant the Group authenticated users the following permissions and apply it to "this folder only" ALLOW: list folders/read data, reading, reading attributes, read extended attributes, create files / add data

I think the MSI is trying to read the free space on the disk on the server, but it cannot because it tries to access the folder where your my documents redirection is sitting.

    Good luck!

  • ActiveSync: *.favorites is not a valid short file name *.

    Help me!!!

I am engineer in a DoD environment.  We had a problem with title error ".favorites is not a short file name.  The error message is displayed when a typical user with any escalated authorization attempts to run ActiveSync.  ActiveSync installs and works fine using a "Domain administrator" account rights, however once the user tries to run the program it fails during installation indicating ".favorites is not a valid short file name.

Our users do not have the right to install programs, or change the registry items, we apply DoD Stig (security technical implementation Guide)... once again, ActiveSync installed fine and runs when you use an account with permissions "Domain Admin".  When the user tries to launch activesync fails... However if I put the user in the domain admin group, run it once while it installs, then remove the user from the domain administrators group. ActiveSync works very well.

If anyone knows how to fix this please PLEASE please help me!

Answer for all those who get this error even regardless of the software:

Microsoft was absolutely "No. f ' ing ' help with this one.  Here's the answer to this question;  If you are in a corporate environment, sense permissions are controlled and restricted as in a DoD, DHS, WHS, ect... The user will need permissions to two registry keys.

    (1) [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]

    (2) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]

Follow these steps, because that is what fixed the problem for me, believe me I had this problem for 3 months, after he passed to me from one of our guys in HERE that he worked for 3 itself.

    1) give the "Admin area" user rights (make sure that the user isn't here, and make sure that you run it past your people from THE first)

    (2) open a session as a user, install activesync * this is a MUST!, otherwise the HKCU registry key will not be created, this is why you get the error message indicating that the name is not a valid short file name *.

    (3) Open regedit and find the two above mentioned registry keys; and give the 'user' or 'domain users' full control of these registry keys. * If you do not, then the very next time the user connects, ActiveSync will try to re - install, you will get the error message and be back at square 1 *.

    (4) disconnect the user, remove the user from the group "Domain Admins".

    (5) test, connect you as the user, run activesync, you will not get this error again.

    (6) If you are having problems... don't think far emailing me I'll help anyone with this problem... * address email is removed from the privacy *.

  • Uninstalling SQL Server Compact 3.5 for devices error 1325.Documents is not a valid short file name.

I tried to uninstall all parts of SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 v (there were 3 parts); the third part, which is

Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 for Devices - ENU

will not uninstall and I get an error message, which has in its title "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 for Devices", (which seems to me indicate that he might be from the application itself?)

READING: "error 1325.Documents is not a valid short file name."

Is there a valid way to uninstall this, given the problem - or an another workaround?

I hope that it is not bad form to reply to my post (!), but I am pleased to announce that this Microsoft utility fixed my problem. I ran it, it looked for my system, then asked me if I wanted to uninstall or install a program, I chose to uninstall, it sought then yet once showed me a list of installed programs. I have selected SQL Server Compact 3.5 for Devices in the list. They asked me if I want to uninstall it (I think that - already done and I do not remember)-anyway, I welcomed the utility for uninstall and there was no problem. It is very useful. I don't know if the source of the error and this solution is specific to windows 7 64 bit, which is what my DELL Latitude E6530 is running, or if it is a general problem and fix. I'll never know the root cause, but at least I can go forward.

  • VMDK is not afraid after deleting files

I have a Windows 2003 Server VM on ESXI 4, which seems to have a disk space issue.

The VMDK is not afraid after that I have remove the files from the WIndows disks.

The VMDK is now about 160GB when I look in the data store.

vSphere said that the storage used is 159 GB. This does not change when I click on "Refresh the use of storage" or when I right click on the data store and select "Refresh".

Storage provisioned is 180 GB because the discs are thin provisioned.

I restarted the VM, but also the entire server.

When I look at Windows via the console there are 3 disks about 30 GB, 130 GB and 15 GB, with 10 GB, 90GB and 13 GB free space respectively.

So, according to my calculations, I should 20 + 40 GB + 2 GB used space or 62GB total.

So, where is my 100 GB?

CHKDSK displays no problem. The 130GB partision was almost full at the same time and after that I deleted the files, the VMDK never shrunk!

    Any ideas?

    TIA-

    -Michael

Even if you have deleted files, the disc was written for and there are still old data on the disk. In fact, you must remove the old raw data of the disc (sdelete in Windows) and then the fret.
