  Your images can be stored anywhere, in any folder, on any hard drive connected to your computer. If you do not want to move out of the Photos folder is fine. But there is no need to be nervous about it. There is nothing magical about the photo folder. It's just a folder on your computer. However, once you have put them in a folder (no matter where it is), it's probably best to not move because Lightroom will lose its reference to the images. It is easy to fix this.
