  • Windows Update fails repeatedly to install updates KB3079904 and six other people, keep trying for 3 weeks now

Drop support for Windows Vista is apparently present but perhaps without notice.

Three weeks since July 14, 2015 Windows Update has repeatedly tried and failed to install seven updates. Three other updates cannot be installed while in time (KB3072633, KB3057154, KB3065979) but was finally installing manually through Microsoft Download Center.  Further attempts by MDC didn't settle because "the update does not apply to your system" (KB3070102, KB3067903).  KB3072630 update did not show an available option of Windows Vista.  The remaining updates would download a version of Vista but just have not installed (KB3070102, KB3079904, KB309392, KB3067505 and KB3065822, which is a Cumulative of IE9 for Windows Vista update).

With no fix that works my PC will apparently try to download these and other updates in perpetuity.  Some files, such as KB915597, is constantly to be installed and reinstalled successfully during this time.

  • Gmail update fails repeatedly

I got my Droid in September-ish under 2.1.  It has since been updated OTA to 2.2 and 2.2.1.

Some time after that it has been improved to 2.2 (and not related to the upgrade, I think) my stopped Gmail refresh automatically.  I can refresh manually, but even after a restart the automatic refresh is still not working.  The only solution is to clear the cache of Gmail & data, and then restart.  Also, I went through all the steps in support of Google Mobile site (http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=113869) several times without success.

This isn't a problem if I have only rarely do.  The problem is that it fails systematically within 1 to 3 days to be 'fixed'. This happened for several months now.  Any suggestions short a Factory Reset?

    Thanks in advance

Thanks for the replies, MrNoSox.  You're right that your first suggestion in your second answer is included in the Google Help article, and I had tried dozens of times without success.  I didn't want to turn off/turn on synchronization via the power control widget, although I confirm that he had shown the widget 'on '.

About a day after I posted the message I had a few hours free and decided to do a factory reset.  3 hours later, I was back running and Gmail has refreshing summer that better (faster and reliable) than it has since I had on the phone!  Also, my other email (Yahoo! and Touchdown) applications also put more quickly and reliably, data stays in 3G most of the time (whereas previously, it dropped to 1 X from dozens of times per day), and the phone is more stable (less breaks/gel/blocks/spontaneous that it recharges.

I'm guessing that there is some problem OS - or to the level of resources that affected many of my applications. In any case, I'm loving this phone once again...

Since it is a Dell computer, chances are a Norton or McAfee free trial is preinstalled. When you have done the clean install, the free trialware would have ALSO reinstalled (but not valid now).  Let's see if the execution of two removal tools & a few tweaks resolves the behavior.

[You can print these instructions for reference offline. [If a step said to restart, restart! ]

    1. click right on the following link to download the Norton removal tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

1B. right click on the following link to download the tool McAfee Consumer Product Removal, save it to your desktop: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. double-click on the file that you saved in # 1 a above, to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    3. double-click the file that you saved in # 1 b above to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then reboot again.

4 start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove programs. Set Program Access and Defaults: select (check) the CUSTOM [<>] configuration option, and then click the arrows pointing to the far-right | Browser: select "Internet Explorer" here (to not "use my current... »). [1]

If you return to check the out parameter #1 above, it'll be "Use my current..." "but now it's going to be"point"to IE so that you don't need to change anything or reset. [Think of it.]

    5. now check your settings here: IE tools | Internet Options | Programs | Default web browser: If the make default button is NOT dimmed, click/press it.
