MS wrote to install my DVD of microsoft, but I did not. I don't think I had one for the last 3 computers I've owned.
I made a disc repair system if that helps and you have run the MS malicious software tool and the update tool.
So far I have not found anything that even begins to point me in the right direction to solve this problem.

Microsoft Update KB979482 failed with error 80073712
I have Windows Vista on my PC. All updates will install properly. For example, the update has been MS security definition 1.87.1452.00 from today (07 Aug). However, this specific update (KB979482) allways fail to update due to the error 80073712. I have already downloaded the file from the Microsoft Site http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=55c05cb8-aa6c-460b-9aa7-084842dab280 , but again, even local, when I try to install, same error "80073712" has sindou. All my software is authentic. No piracy. Having carefully considered, if this wasn't an XP update? Why Microsoft Update can tell me that I have to install it? And then, why should it gives me this error?

Error 80073712 when installing Vista SP 1
I can't install Vista SP1 - error 80073712. I tried all of the corrective actions: System Update tool, download, save and install out of office and put out 3rd party security. I don't have a Windows disc with my RESUME and I can't access my partitioned drive. Any suggestions?
MSicard,
You can try Safe Mode Setup and see if it works. However if you can not access your recovery partition you can get that fixed first. This problem may need to install a repair to do, and you will need to access or a DVD of Vista on your partition recovery.

I get the error code 80073712 - windows component store is damaged - when you try to install windows vista SP1 and also the Cumulative security update to explore 7 (KB978207). Fails every time.
I followed the advice and installed the system update tool for Windows Vista (does this twice), but still cannot download and install updates - get error 80073712.
How can I fix the corrupted windows components store?
Thank you
Dan
CMDC,
If the SFC was not able to repair files then the best thing to do is to reinstall Windows. You can try running a disk error check, if it fixes all of the problems, and then rerun the SFC and then install and run the System Update tool. If there is still a problem with the SFC nto be able to complete then you should do a reinstall.Mike - Engineer Support Microsoft Answers

Windows vista 32-bit update service pack 1 error 80073712 when I try to install.
I tried and tried to install the updated Windows vista 32 bit service pack 1, but also try to update manually, however I continuously get the update error 80073712. I tried the scan tool update service, troubleshooting automatic on the Microsoft Support Web site, as well as research on the Microsoft Answers site for more assistance. However, I still have the same problem, then what else could be the cause so many dell used laptops for not updating this service pack. Either way, I haven't installed service pack 2 either, as I mentioned on some of the answers.
Microsoft says that the operating system is corrupt, so SP1 or SP2 fails. Follow this link for repair.

In addition, the article is ok, but he fails to mention that, after analysis of the Sfc runs, must complete the process.
It is, done Sfc, you must also type: CHKDSK C: /F agree to restart, type: EXIT
restart the pc... When the computer reboots, the repairs are installed/fixed, w/o this cmd, just retry the update is not
possible, installations/repairs, can take place only when the pc is restarted...
