KB2289161 - a security update for MS Office 2010 has no
I make it work on all my boxes of XP SP3. We have recently upgraded to Office 2010 (some since 2007, some new facilities brand.) Later last night was a brand new installation and update of XP.
All other updates for the products and the BONES have been treated successfully. It's the only update that is untreated (and not reviewed by one of our boxes.) Repair by SBS 2008 x 64 (if that makes a difference). Have you tried both by the update service, as well as by hand.
Tried to go in a box and update the User Shell Folders registry settings, but no impact.
UPDATE - did get an error code: 0 x 80246002

It was for me that it was for OneNote, but no matter - the NDR was what was so annoying. I finally called Microsoft support (updated and security related calls are free!)
It's what helped on my new machine load, but still not able to rename Catroot2 unless I'm in Mode safe on other machines (something STILL locked, even when the Cryptsvc process is stopped.)
Fortunately I have only 15 machines:
1. stop Windows Update services (could also do it from the control panel services)
o 1 clickStart, click principally made programs, click Accessories, right-clickcommand promptand select run as administrator.
o 2. If you receive auser account control notification simply click continue.
3. o at the command prompt, type the following commands and pressENTER after each command.
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
4 o please do not close thecommand prompt window.
2. Rename the Windows Update files (could also do it from the Explorer window)
1. o at the command prompt, type the following commands and pressenter after each command:
o 2. ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old
o 3. ren %systemroot%\System32\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
o 4. ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Please, 5 o. do not close thecommand prompt window.
3. apply Microsoft Fixit
o 1. 50461
o 2. 50202
4. restart 50202 requires it
5. apply the update of Microsoft 2289161
As I said, MY machine is OK, the others to accept the office, subsequently update, but VERY manually intensive.

A security update for Microsoft Office XP (KB2289162), always updates not installed
I currently have problems with tent to install the KB2289162 update as it appears that others in this discussion forum are some.
During the first 4 to 6 weeks, this update via automatic update failed with the message "some updates could not be installed the following updates were not installed upgrading security for Microsoft Office XP (KB2289162). I tried to download the fullfile update version and run this. I got "Error 1402 Setup cannot open registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\giffile\shell\Open\ddeexec key".
I did a boot minimum and tried again, and the operation has failed with Error 1402. Then I ran the Fixit as recommended in other threads and tried again, but also the operation failed with Error 1402.
I'm running Windows XP Professional, with Security Essentials for virus protection. I had Norton Internet security on the PC and the Avira Antivirus, but problems with these two led to my abandonment together.
Can you please suggest a solution to the please my problem?

I had some trouble installing the above update (security for 2007 Microsoft Office system update: KB 2289158). When the update fails, the error I get says:
Code 80070641 Windows update encountered an unknown error
When I click on the link below the error that says "get help with this error, a Windows Help and Support window opens with this in the search box:
"WindowsUpdate_80070641" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"
I did some research and it seems that this error indicates a problem with the installer, but I tried several proposed fixes and none of them work. Defective patches include:
-modification of the parameters of service by Windows install to start automatically and then start it manually, and then try to update
-With the help of the (Administrator) command prompt to manually start windows update, and then try to update
-Use of the (Administrator) command prompt to manually stop the windows update, then try to update
-With the help of the (Administrator) command prompt manually update windows, then rename the files that have been damaged (sorry, I don't know more than what files), and then try to update
-Disable UAC, then try to update
-Use of the Download Center Microsoft to download the specific update and try to install.
What's weird, is that it is the only update with the problem, I can and have installed every update that was shown to me. Recently manually, I started Setup of windows with the command prompt, then run the update. Later, I tried to stop the service and restart, but the service was already stopped. It seems that the installation of windows service is stopped during the update.
I'm running a Windows Vista x 86 machine.
Any help will be appreciated.

2 UPDATES have consistently failed to install since 12/16/10: update of security for Microsoft Works 9 (KB2431831) and update of security for Microsoft Office System 2007 (KB2288931). I tried to REINSTALL... and CONTINUED on for more than a week now with no result. I don't get the error messages or codes, so I'm not sure what to do! They are considered IMPORTANT so I guess that I need these updates and I TRIED to RESTART after update with NO RESULTS as well. The 2 latest updates only "UPDATED successfully", before the long chain UPDATES failed, which began on 12/16/2010 (as previously mentioned) were: update for Internet Explorer for Windows Vista (KB2467659) and Security Update for Windows Vista (KB2305420) someone knows what do to update failed? Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you. {By the way... I use my computer for use at home or school.} Thank you.
This has been answered above in my first post. I didn't know that I reposted on the same site. Thanks :)
