    Hi Ben Dean,

Use the (SFC.exe) System File Checker tool to determine which file is causing the problem and then replace the file.

To run the System File Checker, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start and type cmd in the box start the search.

    2. in the area of results, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be asked to type the password for an administrator account. If you are the administrator or type the administrator password, click on continue. Then click on continue.

    3. at the command prompt, type Sfc/scannow, and then press ENTER.

  • Windows Update fail to install

original title: significant problems with Vista and Windows Update

I'm trying to reinstall Vista. I keep running into a problem where some Windows updates fail, even when you check the history they are reported as installed. In some cases, a patch will be reported as installed once and failed three times. Often, failures are dated later than the initial success.

If that fails, the machine does not start and I am presented with a screen asking you to go into the various forms of safe mode. What I do is starting on the installation DVD and running Startup Repair. It seems according to the most recent restore point and setting the startup process. Then, it seems that some of the fixes that have been initially successful are now chess.
The laptop in question is a Dell Inspiron 1420 running on Vista. I did a clean install on the startup disk.
What the hell is happening? I just want to make with this stupid installation, but I can't return the phone to its owner until each update is applied. Any help is appreciated.

I'm not stupid either, Chief. When I got the laptop back to its owner, a virus checker will be up and active. I am a fairly advanced user so that I can get without it if I'm only hitting servers of Ms.

Owner of the laptop is going to be behind a hardware router wireless surfing, although I go to the firewall as an extra precaution.
Everything is up-to-date. There is no more patches. IE 9 is good to go. I don't understand how IE is critical to the security of Windows. I want that the owner of the laptop to use Chrome, because frankly it's faster and better than IE for the web standard handles.
    Have a good weekend.

I find it peculiar that you just bought a HP computer brand new, still-in-the-box, which came with Windows 8, not 8.1, preinstalled Windows. That said, cross your fingers, roll up your sleeves and try the fix following multiple step, I cooked up just for your computer...

    ACTIONS

[You may want to print these instructions for reference offline.  IMPORTANT => NO SKIP & perform all steps in one uninterrupted session!  [If a step said to restart, restart! ]

1 right-click on the link, select SAVE TARGET as.... & download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    3. right click on the file that you saved in step #1 above and select run as administrator to run the Norton utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

    4. right-click on the following link and save the download to your desktop: ie8 - rereg.all.zip [1]

4B. right click on the file that you saved in # 4 has & select EXTRACT ALL. This will create a new folder in Office also appointed ie8 - rereg.all. The folder contains both scripts below (plus a third that will NOT be).

    Note-online scripts are good for IE9, IE10 & IE11, too,

    5. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the task bar), open the folder created in step # 4 b above & double-click on the file named ie8 - rereg.32on64.cmd to run the script.

5 b. Repeat this for the file named ie8 - rereg.64on64.cmd then restart.

    6. reset Internet Explorer by the MANUAL of instructions on this page-online http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Note => for best results, check the option Remove personal settings .

7 run the Windows Update Troubleshooter from start to finish by the first paragraph on this page-online http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates [2]

    8. restart once more then test by launching a manual check of updates & see if KB2887069 any/all others updated and allows to install now. Follow all the instructions.

    9. assuming all went well, see if Windows 8.1 is available through the store Windows and, if so, if it will be properly installed. Still, follow all the instructions.

To get the "Nero" thing figured out, I took the advice of someone on the Forum/Blog of Nero. The person has provided a lenghty explanation how to uninstall LiquidTV completely by removing the registry files... I don't really know what I'm doing in the registry, but everything that I helped my problem of Nero, but I couldn't tell you WHAT I deleted OR if I have deleted any bad subfolders or whatnot!... the next time I started my PC is when the NEW NUMBER is right.

#2 - On my next BOOT, Windows Update has found an IMPORTANT update:

A security update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x 64 systems (KB954430)

.. .and it fails every time, it tries to install saying this:

    Windows Update - failed

Code 643 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

"Get help with this error" provides little or no help... but it says this:
     "WindowsUpdate_00000643" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

All the research I did, the problem seems to be with Microsoft .NET Framework... .and all the solutions I found talking about it, "UNINSTALL all THE .NET FRAMEWORK & REINSTALL" ... I tried and there is no .NET Frameworks listed in Add/Remove, and when I press on ' VIEW INSTALLED UPDATES'... " on my PC it says, "no updates are installed on this computer"... what the _____?

#3 - Today, I thought I would just pop the WINDOWS 7 installation disc and do a repair/upgrade... It will not be upgraded.
He cycles most of the way through, then he Has STOPPED and says this:

The following problems prevent upgrade Windows. Cancel the upgrade, perform each task, (it lists only a SINGLE task), and then restart the upgrade to continue.

    • Windows needs to be restarted if necessary to system files can be changed before you continue.

Does not help restart. He tried 3 times and he ends up doing the same thing.
Is it possible I deleted something out of the register so far here and which is cause of all this?
If so, is it possible to fix WITHOUT doing a new install of Windows 7?
OR... anything can be a problem... Please HELP!

(And please note: I am a first year student college with specialization in computer science... but I just started last semester, so I don't know what I should... yet. - though, I SHOULD have known better than to mess with the registry!) My bad).

Thanks a lot for your time in advance, and I look forward to hear from you!  VikeMike4

    Erwan,
You must read this entire thread and the State, if you have tried the steps listed here or that you tried to fix the problem.  Take a look at this article, because it has a solution for 643 errors: KB971187
